Samsung MU8000 Review

Along with MU8500 series, Samsung MU8000 is part of Series 8 of Samsung’s 2017 Premium UHD TV lineup. Its class is under Samsung series 9. In the market, it is available on some screen sizes include 49 Inch (UN49MU8000, 55 Inch UN55MU8000, 65 Inch (UN65MU8000), and 75 Inch (UN75MU8000). If we see the series, it is the successor of KS8000 series. Compare to the predecessor KS8000 series, there are some technologies some technologies which be removed like Quantum Dot Panel. Nevertheless, refer to their piece when they are first released, Samsung MU8000 series is relatively sold cheaper than the predecessor KS8000. Still focus on HDR, MU8000 also already support HDR 10 and also designed to support HLG (Hybrid Log Gamma).

To produce amazing picture quality for its class, Samsung MU8000 is powered by UHD Remastering Engine as its picture engine and supported by the number of newest Samsung’s advanced technologies. There is a combination of edge-lit LED backlighting with local dimming and UHD Dimming, Precision Black, and Peak Illuminator Pro technologies for producing wide brightness range with deep black level and bright peak brightness. Unlike the predecessor KS8000 where there is quantum dot technology as their color technology, this technology has been removed from Samsung MU8000 series and as the instead, there is 4K Color Drive Extreme as the color technology behind it. Additionally, for handling motion blur and 24p movies, it is powered by Motion Rate 240 technology based on native 120 Hz refresh rate panel.  There is also Ultra Clear Panel technology that designed for reducing reflection and minimizing glare when it is used in a very bright room, so the picture still looks consistently amazing. And that is not less interesting from the features of MU8000 is about its Smart TV platform where it features Tizen OS 2017 that offers fast and responsive performance also a lot of interesting apps.

Because since 2016 Samsung has removed 3D technology from their lineup, of course it is not also equipped with 3D technology. Additionally, as VA TV, poor viewing angle also becomes its major downside, so watching TV from center and in front of the screen is highly recommended if you don’t want to lose picture quality.

Samsung MU8000 Performance

Picture Quality

Overall, picture quality produced by Samsung MU8000 is very good for its price range. Movies, TV Shows, Sports, and other type of contents look very good on the screen of MU8000. Almost all aspects of picture quality of MU8000 series are strong. Black level is deep, black uniformity is good, brightness is bright, contrast is strong, and color is very accurate. All of them make it offers good picture quality no matter the light condition of a room.  Nevertheless, compared to the predecessor KS8000 series, there was a slight decrease in the quality of images produced.

Loss of quantum dot technology might have a great impact on its color reproduction. Color that produced by MU8000 might not as saturated as the predecessor KS8000 series or QLED TV that comes with quantum dot technology. However, color of the picture produced by Samsung MU8000 still look very accurate, even when displaying HDR contents that require wide color gamut. As we know, HDR 10 needs at least 90% of DCI P3 Color space and MU8000 can cover color gamut more than that. Additionally, MU8000 series also ready supports 10 bit depth of color that required for displaying HDR 10 contents fully. The result, in addition the color of the picture produced looks very accurate, its color gradient also looks very smooth. Essentially, color produced by MU8000 is great for its price range, but not as good as the predecessor KS8000.

Moving on contrast produced by it, black level and contrast produced by MU8000 series also very deep and strong for its class. It is far darker than 0.05 nits as the recommendation of HDR 10. This makes it is as a TV that offers good picture quality when used in a dark room.  Black scenes looks very black that makes detail of images in dark scenes looks very clear without loss of color saturation. Particularly when displaying HDR contents, dark scenes look very details. Of course, this is in accordance with what is expected of HDR technologies that offer more detail image in shadow.

Samsung UHD Dimming

Meanwhile, although peak brightness reached by Samsung MU8000 is not as bright as what reached the predecessor KS8000 series and still below 1000 nits as the minimum recommendation of HDR 10, but for displaying SDR contents in a bright room, it is still quite bright. Additionally, it is also quite bright to make its HDR performance is great. However, for fighting glare in a very bright room especially in a room where sunlight coming in directly through the windows, it is not still quite bright. This makes the quality of the picture will be reduced in a very bright room. In other hand, it is not also quite bright for displaying HDR contents like as what recommended by UHD alliance.

Peak Illuminator and Precision Black

For displaying lower resolution contents in near 4K quality, Samsung MU8000 series is also equipped with great performance UHD Up-scaling engine, as great as the predecessor KS8000. This allows you to enjoy contents with any resolution sharply and clearly in near 4K quality. Even when the sources is 480p contents like DVDs movies, the picture don’t looks softly.  And of course when the sources have higher resolution like 720p contents or 1080p contents, the final images in 4K resolution that produced will look sharper and clearer with small details preserved far more.

Overall, picture quality produced by Samsung MU8000 is not as good as the predecessor KS8000 series, but it still can be said amazing for its class. HDR performance is also great for its class due its deep black level, strong contrast, and wide color gamut. The only downside is about its poor viewing angle where it is a native characteristic of VA Panel as its panel technology. But as long as you don’t often watch TV from side viewing angle, this is not a big problem.

Motion Handling and 24p Playback

Samsung MU8000 has very fast pixel response time that means it is great for watching fast moving images like sports programs or fast movies. Behind fast moving objects, there is only a short trail where most of people don’t notice about it. It even is better than what produced by the predecessor KS8000. Additionally, MU8000 series is also a great TV when used for watching movies. No matter it is 24p movies from Blur Ray, 24p via 60i/60p signals like movies from satellite TV or streaming devices, it offers smooth picture quality with judder-free. Nevertheless, for removing judder without adding “soap opera effect’ when you are watching movies, you need have to set “Auto Motion Plus” to “Custom”, “Judder Reduction” to ”0”, and  also “Blur Reduction to “0”. In other hand, because Samsung MU8000 has native 120 Hz refresh rate panel, it also support 30 fps and 60 fps interpolation and can interpolate lower frame rate content.

Like the predecessor KS8000, Samsung MU8000 is also equipped with 4 HDMI ports and 3 USB ports as their major connectivity. Its HDMI ports already supports HDCP 2.2, CEC, Audio Return Channel, and other format what required for 4K HDR connections. In addition to HDMI and USB, there are also RF In (Antenna In), Ethernet In, Built In Wi-Fi, Digital Audio Out, and RS232. There are no AV In and Component in so if you have other electronics devices where they are as their major connectivity, you need a converter.  And Like the Predecessor, all HDMI Ports, 2 USB Ports, RF In are installed on separated box called “One Connect Box”.  Meanwhile, talking about input lag, Samsung MU8000 has very low input lags at any signals once “Game Mode” is activated, even for 4K with HDR signals. This makes MU8000 is as a great TV when used for playing any kind of games in any resolution, even for fast paced games that requires fast reflexes.

Smart TV

Samsung Tizen 2017

Like other models of Samsung’s 2017 TV lineup, Samsung MU8000 features Samsung’s 2017 Tizen OS as its smart TV platform and powered by a quad core processor. Its layout is designed very attractively with white theme and nice animation and also simple that allows you feel comfort when navigating. Selecting between apps feel very responsive and once app is launched, the loading in time is very fast. Additionally, selecting between different menus is also straightforward. Talking about apps provided, they are very complete. There are Premium VoD Service like Netflix, Amazon Videos, YouTube, and more, Web Browser, Screen Mirroring, Cloud Games, and many more. Meanwhile, as the controller, Samsung MU8000 use Smart Remote like what used by KS Series. There is built in microphone for voice navigation and Google search. Additionally, with tons of IR commands embedded, this remote also can be functioned as universal remote that allow you to control other device connected on your TV. But of course, this is limited for basic functions while for advanced functions, you still need their default remote control.

Samsung MU8000 series is a mid class TV that offers good picture quality, no matter it used for watching TV shows, Movies, or Sports. Its black level is very deep with very strong contrast while color is very accurate that makes its picture looks consistently amazing in a room with any light condition. Meanwhile, peak brightness is also above average and quite bright for displaying contents in a bright room but not as bright as what offered by the predecessor KS8000 series. Lacks of Quantum Dot Technology makes its color gamut is not as wide as the predecessor KS8000 series. Overall, picture quality offered by MU8000 is good but it is not as good as KS8000 series as the predecessor. It even is more identical to what offered by KU7000 series.

In addition to good picture quality for its class, Samsung MU8000 is also a good TV when used for watching movies due its great motion handling. Input lag is very low that make it is a great TV for any kind of games, even for responsive game that requires fast reflex. Smart TV platform is very attractive and responsive that makes you more comfort when enjoying 4K entertainment in your home. Poor Viewing Angle is the major downside of Samsung MU8000 but it is not a big problem as long as you don’t often watch TV from multiple viewing angles.

Should I Buy This TV? If you are searching mid-class TV that offers good performance for mixed usage and good picture quality no matter the light condition of the room, I think Samsung MU8000 is a good option for you. The excepting of side viewing angle, the performance of each of features that offered is above average. But even so, before you decide to buy it, there are a lot of opinions from their customers where you can make as your further consideration.

Bottom Line

Come as the successor of KS8000, it is lacking of Quantum Dot technology. This makes color space that covered by MU8000 is not as wide as KS8000. Additionally, its peak brightness is also not as bright as the predecessor KS8000 that course makes its HDR performance is not as great as what offered by the predecessor.
