Samsung KS9800 is part of Samsung Series 9 and the top model of Samsung’s 2016 4K TV lineup. It is the only model of Samsung’s 2016 lineup that comes with Multi Zones Full Array Backlighting. In the market, it is available in 3 variants of screen size, UN65KS9800 with 65” screen size, UN78KS9800 with 78” screen size and UN88KS9810 with 88” screen size. The excepting of Full Array LED, what offered by KS9800 are same to what offered lower series KS9500 series. And as top level model, of course it also offers premium picture quality. But like other Samsung’s 2016 4K TV line, there is also no 3D technology on KS9800 and instead, it comes with HDR technology that offers more detail picture quality in shadow and dark scenes. One of the highlights of KS9800 is about brightness and color. In 2016, it is a 4K TV with brightest and most color-rich. With the superb performance in color, contrast, and brightness, of course picture quality delivered by KS9800 is undoubtedly whether it is in HDR or SDR quality. So, if you want to see the real sense of HDR, KS9800 offers all of that.

The Performance of Samsung KS9800
Samsung KS9800 offers stunning performance in almost all aspects. Picture quality in HDR or non HDR, UHD Up-scaling, Motion Clarity, all of them are delivered stunningly by KS9800. But like other series of Samsung’s 2016 lineup, there is no 3D technology behind it and as a top level 4K TVs, this certainly is very fortunate. We will not discuss why Samsung didn’t equip their 2016 lineup with 3D technology but certainly, they have their own reason to do it.
Multi Zones Full array LED is one the highlights of KS9800. And it is what distinguishes KS9800 with other models of Samsung Series 9 like KS9000 and 9500. If we see what offered by other models of Series 9 is already amazing, KS9800 offers more. As we know, theoretically, full array direct LED offers better black level and peak brightness with better black uniformity than edge LED backlighting. Of course this makes, contrast level that achieved by KS9800 cannot be matched by other model of Series 9.
If we discuss about 2016 4K TV, we will prefer to first discuss about HDR because it is a big campaign of 4K TV in 2016. Although it is not new technology because previously this technology has been used in photography but it is something big after 4K campaign. And for producing good HDR quality, there is a standardization set by UHD Alliance that should be met by a 4K TV to get “UHD Premium” label, among others are 1000 nits peak brightness, 0.05 nits black level, 90% DCI color space, and 10 bits color.
To meet the standardization of UHD alliance, Samsung KS9800 is powered HDR 1000 engine for processing HDR sources. Combine to Peak Illuminator Ultimate and Full Array LED backlight, this makes peak brightness achieved by KS9800 is more than 1000 nits, even brightest among 2016 TV that available in the market. While the peak brightness of KS9800 is brightest, the deepest possible black level achieved is also very impressive. This may not the deepest because there is LG OLED TV that offers the deepest, but at least it is darker than the standard minimum 0.05 nits. Combination of Supreme UHD Dimming, Precision Black Local and Ultra Black is really effective to improve black level of KS9800. Moreover, there is Multizone Full Array LED as its backlight technology, this course makes the contrast produced by KS9800 is more solid.
The other aspects that affects on HDR performance is about color. As mentioned, to get “UHD Premium” label with great HDR picture quality, a 4K TV should deliver color gamut that can cover more than 90% DCI P3 Color space. Additionally, it also must support 10 bit of depth color. Samsung KS9800 with quantum dot panel technology can cover more than 93% DCI P3 color space. It is an outstanding value that can be achieved by a TV at this time. In other sides, KS9800 also already support 10 bit color. This mean this TV can deliver more than 1 billion shades of color. This makes KS9800 is including 4K TVS that has most-richer color.
With the great performance in color and contrast, HDR picture produced by KS9800 is really amazing and this illustrates what exactly HDR about. And of course, this is not about HDR only, but also traditional “Standard Dynamic Range” or SDR. And with curved panel, the contrast and color degradation from side viewing angle can be minimized.
Great performance UHD Up-scaling of 4K TV is still required considering most of the contents that available in the market is mastered in full HD or lower resolution. Furthermore, with the advent of HDR, this makes the creators prefer to re-master their contents in HDR than 4K. The level of difficulty and the width of bandwidth are the main reasons. But you don’t need to worry because Samsung KS9800 is also equipped with great performance UHD Up-scaling engine. So, although the original resolution of your sources is not 4K, you can enjoy them in 4K quality amazingly on the screen of KS9800. The great result is achieved when your sources is full HD or 1080 resolution like Blu-Ray movies. The picture is up-scaled greatly in near 4K quality. 720p source like from Cable TV is also up-scaled greatly in 4K but not as great as from 1080p resolution. The result is even better than when you see in full HD TV. Even for 480p sources like DVD movies, the resulted picture also still looks clear and smooth in 4K quality.
Although Samsung always have difficulty in handling fast motion images, but the performance of KS9800 in handling fast motion images didn’t describe it like that. As we see on specification table above, Samsung KS9800 is powered by “Supreme Motion Rate 240”. You need to know, this technology actually is based on native 120 Hz refresh rate panel. “Supreme” label shows it advantage than “Motion Rate 240” that both based on native 120 Hz refresh rate panel. Motion blur may not be eliminated completely, but at least they don’t much appear. With great performance in Motion Clarity, this allows you to enjoy your favorite fast movies or sport program comfortably.
Talking about Smart TV featured by KS9800, we will talk about the one of the best Smart TV platform. Like other series of Samsung’s 2016 SUHD TV lineup, KS9800 features Tizen Operating System with Smart Hub as its platform. There are some improvements to correct some flaws on previously models. Layout design and navigation between different apps menu and different other sections are re-designed so easier than last year version. But there is a throw-back about the processor where in last year version is powered by Octa Core processor while in this version it is powered by a quad core processor. But even so, with the improvement in performance, Tizen OS still offers responsive and fast performance.
The other advantage, almost all of the 4K and home entertainment apps are provided by Tizen OS. Premium VoD service, Fast Web browser that support many media, Screen Mirroring, and many more, you can find all of them on KS9800. A new app newly introduced in 2016 is about Cloud Gaming where it allows you to play tons of cloud games via streaming and without a game console. And the more interesting, to play a game, you will just be charged with Pay per Title and not monthly subscription. Of course it is more efficient because not every time you will play games.
Other interesting point of Tizen OS is about its smart touch remote. It has been redesigned since last year including cursor control on screen and voice search. The efficacy of buttons is also be maximized. And the most useful function is about point and click that has same function like a mouse on your PC. In tandem with Tizen OS, it works greatly. But a slight flaws, there is no traditional clicker or full number pad where most of consumers are more familiar or rather with them.
As a major connectivity, Samsung KS9800 is equipped with 4 HDMI 2.0a. I think it is quite enough to cover your HD devices in connectivity. Its HDMI ports already support what 4K connectivity required likes HDCP 2.2, HEVC. There is also upgradable one connect mini box include Ethernet connection, Built-in Wi-Fi, and 3 USB 3.0 Ports. The benefit, if in future there is new version of this connectivity, you just need update without buy a new device.
As mentioned, Samsung KS9800 is the only one of Samsung’s 2016 4K TV that comes with Multi Zones Full Array LED backlighting. This makes the contrast more solid and color more vibrant. If LG OLED TV offers deepest black level, KS9800 offers brightest peak white. With the stunning performance in contrast and color, picture quality produced by KS9800 looks really amazing in HDR or SDR. But unfortunately, it is not equipped with 3D technology. As top models of course, it is a big downside. But fortunately, the big downside about 3D is changed with the great performance in HDR, a big campaign of TV in 2016.
Not only about picture quality, Smart TV platform that offered by Samsung KS9800 is a distinct advantage. In addition to it is fast with user friendly layout, it also provides almost all 4K and media apps. Of course, this will makes you more comfort when enjoying home entertainment in your own home.
Price is the separate issue of KS9800. In the market, the smallest size UN65KS9800 is sold about $4000 while the biggest size UN88KS9810 is sold about $20000. Although the money that you will spend is comparable to the performance that offered, of course this need further consideration before you decide to buy it. But if you have extra budgets for it, there is no harm if you want to buy it because it offers the real sense of HDR.
