Samsung KS8000 Review (UN49KS8000, UN55KS8000, UN60KS8000, UN65KS8000)
Samsung KS8000 is the lowest models of Samsung’s 2016 4K TV lineup. Be part of Series 8 with KS8500, KS8000 series comes with flat panel type. And like most model of 4K TV models that released in 2016, HDR performance becomes a main highlight, in addition to there are also the number features that is not less attractive. As part of Samsung SUHD TV, picture quality offered certainly is undoubtedly. Comes with the number Samsung’s most advanced technologies like Quantum Dot, HDR 1000, and many more, this is included in the ranks of TV with the best picture quality. Lack of few technologies like Supreme UHD Dimming and Supreme Motion Rate 240, Samsung KS8000 is sold cheaper than its cousin KS9000. With almost same performance, it offers more reasonable price than its “top-shelf” series 9.
But unlike the predecessor Samsung’s 2015 series 8, Samsung KS8000 is lacking of 3D technology. But it is not alone because there are no Samsung’s 2016 4K TV series that equipped with 3D technology, even for top class KS9500. This actually is very unfortunate, considering Samsung’s 2015 3D TV lineup with their active 3D technology offers great 3D performance. This course will be disappointing some parties though Samsung certainly has their own reason for omitting 3D technology from their 2016 lineup.

The Performance of Samsung KS8000
Unlike the lower series Samsung KU series where their HDR performance is still below standardization of good HDR picture quality, Samsung KS8000 Series offers much better quality in HDR. For processing HDR signals, there is HDR 1000 technology where its performance is better than HDR Premium behind Samsung KU Series. But of course it is not alone. For producing strong contrast with deep black level and bright peak white, there is combination of UHD Dimming as the software manipulation for improving contrast and real Local Dimming called Precision Black Local Dimming. Not only that, for improving black level there is also Ultra black technology while for improving peak brightness, there is Peak Illuminator Ultimate behind KS8000 series. With the support of these technologies, Samsung KS8000 series is able to produce more than 1000 nits peak luminance while black level is under 0.02 nits. As we know, 1000 nits is minimum value of peak luminance should be produced by HDR TV for producing good HDR picture quality.
The other main key technology is about quantum dot panel which was called Nano Crystal Color in 2015. As we know, quantum dot panel is the highest level Samsung’s color technology that provided wider range of color gamut. This technology is able to cover more than 93% of the DCI P3 color space and this course is decent value for producing good HDR. Moreover it also supports 10 bits color which means it can produces more than 1 billion shades of color. This makes color produced by KS8000 is much richer and more vibrant than Samsung UHD KU series that only support 8 bit color.
With great display characteristic about contrast and color offered by Samsung KS8000, picture produced look very amazing. The images in hiding or dark areas look clearer and very details. This course is according to what campaigned in term of HDR technology on TV. As we know, HDR actually is not a new technology. Previously, it has been used on digital camera for producing more details photos.
A bit shortage is about side viewing angle where color and contrast looks slightly degraded if you are watching TV not from center and front. But even so, it is not its own issue because almost LED TV has same problem about side viewing angle as the impact the use of backlight on LED TV. But this doesn’t mean there is no solution. Its brother KS8500 series with curved panel offers similar performance but offers wider range of side viewing angle. But of course it also sold more expensive.
As we see on specification table above, for minimizing motion blur when it is processing video with fast motion scenes, Samsung KS8000 is powered by Motion Rate 240 Hz technology. 240 Hz actually is not the true value for its refresh rate panel but it is only Samsung’s algorithm for measuring the performance of their lineup result based on native refresh rate panel, backlight and the speed of processor. The native frequency of refresh panel of KS8000 series actually is only 120 Hz, the same value for al model of Samsung’s 2016 SUHD TV series. Compared to higher models Series 9, it is lacking “Supreme” on their “Motion Rate” label. But this is just software and a bit trick hardware manipulation and the most important aspect is still native refresh rate frequency. The result certainly is not much different moreover for most people with untrained eyes. Picture produced by KS8000 looks clear and smooth without much motion blur when it is used for watching sport program of other contents with fast motion scenes.
No matter its is entry level Samsung’s UHD TV lineup or top level Samsung SUHD TV lineup, performance that offered by Samsung 4K TV including KS8000 series is great. It is quiet enough to match what offered by Sony 4K TVs where we all know they are the best in last couple years. When you are watching full HD contents like Blu-ray movies, the picture looks very clear and details and not much different to when you are watching from native 4K contents. SD 480p or HD 720p contents like TV cable media or DVD format is also up-scaled greatly in near 4K quality. The benefit, it doesn’t only up-scale non 4K contents to 4K quality wonderfully but also inject non HDR contents with a slight to moderate in contrast quality so the picture produced looks more striking and sharper.
Moving on Smart TV platform, Samsung KS8000 with Tizen OS offers attractive and smart TV platform. It is an improvement from traditional Samsung Smart TV that offers faster and more responsive performance. The response time operation is much faster than Samsung Smart TV platform featured by Samsung KU series, although both are powered by the same processor. Additionally, Smart HUB has also been upgraded more user friendly so allowing you easier to organize your favorites program or apps. The interesting, it allows Multiple User where each of you family can organize apps and programs according to the taste of each.
In addition a lot of attractive apps provided by previous version , there is a new feature that is not less attractive called Cloud Gaming. For this case, Samsung cooperate with Gaikai, a big company in Cloud Gaming service. Unlike most cloud games services that charge you with monthly subscription, to play cloud games in Samsung KS8000, you will just be charged in pay per title. This is certainly is more beneficial because you are not burdened with monthly fee while you doesn’t play games at all times. And to play a game, you just need high speed internet connection and pad controller.
And finally, for making you more comfort when operating apps or browsing on the internet, Samsung KS800 series is equipped with Samsung Smart Touch Remote that has a lot of useful function likes voice navigation, touch pad, and point and click.
The number of major connectivity of Samsung KU8000 series can be said more than enough. With 4 HDMI 2.0a ports and 3 USB ports, this is pretty enough to handle your HD devices. HDMI ports of KS8000 also already supports what required for this time like HDCP 2.2, HEVC, VP9, HDR, and more. But unfortunately, Samsung continuously uses USB 2.0 for KS8000 series and not USB 3.0 that certainly is faster. But even so, USB 2.0 is also feasible for streaming video contents from storage devices, camcorders, cameras, and other USB drives. The other benefit is about One Connect Box included, where you just need to upgrade your box without having to replace the whole TV when there is newer version of connectivity in future.
For connecting on the internet, Samsung KS8000 gives you two options, via Wi-Fi or Ethernet connectivity. This is required when you are accessing Smart TV or playing cloud games. The other connectivity available on KS8000 is 1 port RF (Terrestrial), RS 232C, and digital audio output (optical).
Each model of Samsung KS8000 series is equipped with speaker system with total 40 watts of audio power out. 10 watts from each main left and right speaker and 10 watts each from 2 sub woofer. For medium or smaller room, this certainly is sufficient moreover there are two subwoofers that improve the low range of audio. But for a more spacious room, it is still need additional sound bar.
Samsung KS8000 is a lowest series of Samsung’s 2016 SUHD TV lineup. It is a great 4K TV with reasonable price. As a part of Samsung SUHD TV lineup that comes with the number Samsung’s most advanced technologies, picture quality certainly is a highlight of KS8000. Black level looks very deep while peak white looks very bright. Additionally, with the support of Quantum dot panel that cover more than 93 % DCI P3 color space and 10 bit panel that offers more than 1billion shades of color, this makes the color produced by KS8000 is richer and more vibrant then top model Samsung UHD TV KU7500 series. This great display specs of KS8000 is certainly is highly qualified to produce good HDR picture quality. The other highlight is about Tizen OS that offers responsive and attractive smart TV platform.
But otherwise, Side viewing angle still becomes a downside of KS8000. But if you want other models with similar performance than KS8000 but offers better side viewing angle, there is Samsung KS8500 series as the option for you. Without 3D technology, overall, what offered by Samsung KS8000 series is great for class.
