Compared two series above UH8500 and UH9500, it is lacking of 3D technology and comes with less audio power at 20 watts. In addition to mentioned, LG UH7700 is similar to the series above UH8500 series. Like other 4K TVs that released in 2016, it also already supports HDR where this technology becomes a biggest focus in TV released in 2016. And as part of LG’s 2016 SUHD TV lineup, quantum dot is the main advantage than the lower series UHD lineup in addition there are also some advantages of other features offered.

The Performance of LG UH7700

LG UH7700 series is a mid class 4K UHD TV with good all-around performance. The performance may not as great as the series above UH9500 or LG LED TV, but for most of people, it is an ideal 4K TV for their room. A bit lacking is about picture deteriorates in a dark room when it is used for watching sports or movies but overall, what offered by UH7700 is great for its price. Wide Viewing Angle, attractive and responsive Smart TV, ease to use are parts of many advantages offered by UH7700. 3D is a big lacking of UH 7700. But if you are a 3D fans, there is UH8500 that offers similar performance but comes with 3D technology and better audio performance.

Picture Quality

Overall, picture quality offered by LG UH7700 is average. But considering their cheap price for each screen size, what offered by UH7700 series still can be said great. One of the highlights is about HDR, where it is become a big focus in 2016.

For producing good HDR picture quality, LG UH7700 is powered by the number LG’s advanced technologies. Behind it, there is Super Mastering engine and its image processor HDR Super with Dolby Vision for handling HDR signals. This is LG’s attempt to meet the industry standardization of “Ultra HD Premium” set by UHD alliance. But of course it is not alone because there are still many technologies like Quantum Dot , Tru Black Panel, Ultra Luminance, and Local Dimming that supports its performance. As we know, to meet the  standardization of good HDR picture quality, a 4K TV must achieve 1000 nits or more peak brightness and 0.05 or lower nits black level or 540 nits peak brightness with 0.0005 nits black level. Additionally, a 4K TV also should be cover more than 90% DCI P3 Color space and support 10 bit depth of color. Fortunately, with the technologies mentioned, UH7700 allows for 91.2% DCI P3 Color space coverage and of course this meet the standardization of color gamut of HDR 4K set by UHD Alliance.

But unfortunately, great performance in color gamut and peak brightness doesn’t offset good performance in black level. If I say it is great, it is for a fellow TV with IPS panel.  Compared to other TV with VA Panel like Samsung’s 2016 SUHD TV or Vizio’s 2016 P series lineup, the black level delivered by UH7700 is not quite enough to match them. Although there are some technologies like local dimming and Tru Black panel behind it that minimizes deterioration of black level caused the use of IPS Panel, it is still not enough. As we know, the use of IPS panel deliver wider side viewing angle than VA panel and it is an advantage of IPS Panel but in other hands, it hurts black level that created.

UHD Up-scaling Engine

Despite being a few years passed since 4K TVs was mass produced for market, the availability of 4K contents in the market is still lacking. Moreover with the advent of HDR technology in TV, some creators prefer to re-master their contents in HDR than in 4K. The reasons are difficulty level and bandwidth required for streaming. Therefore, the great performance of UHD –Upscaler engine of a 4K TV is still needed. Fortunately, LG UH7700 is equipped with great Performance 4K Up-Scaler engine embedded on their picture engine called Super Mastering engine. There is much improvement over last year models. And the result, when the source is 480p like DVDs or SD TVs, the result is good, well as when the source is 720p like Cable TV. Moreover when the source is 1080p contents like Blu-rays, the result is very well, as with what offered by Samsung 4K TV. So with the issue about 4K contents still scarce, of course this is not a big issue for LG UH7700.

Motion Clarity

TruMotion 240 Hz based on native 120 Hz refresh rate panel is the technology behind clear and smooth picture quality when it is displaying video contents with fast scenes. Although in certain scenes some motion blur cannot be eliminated completely but there is no much motion blur noticeable. This performance even is better than Samsung 4K TV lineup, though they have same native 120 Hz refresh rate panel. That is why this TV is very decent for gaming or watching sport programs or fast movies.

Tru Motion 240 Hz

Smart TV

One of the flagships of LG UH7700 is about their Smart TV Platform. As its platform, it features WebOS 3.0 and we all know, it is one of most attractive smart TV platforms. Entering its third year, there are some improvements that make it offers faster boot-up times and higher level of usability. Speed of switching between apps is also faster than previous version. Additionally, to make you easier to operate, layout interface is designed more intuitive and cleaner.  Unlike other smart TV platform that populates available apps on its home screen, WebOS populates your favorite apps with nice colored strip across the bottom of the screen.

Web OS 3.0

If you have used two previous versions of WebOS, of course you will be very disappointed with its streaming ability because in the two previous versions, WebOS has some issue on streaming ability particularly when streaming 4K contents. But you don’t need to worry about it because LG has completely overhauled to the entire platform so its streaming ability is much better than previous versions. This means when it is used for streaming contents, there is almost no buffering times. But even so, although LG has done a big overhaul to its platform, it also depends on the speed of your internet connections.

The other interesting point of WebOS 3.0 is about their Magic Remote. With point and click function, It is very helpful when you are browsing on the internet or shorting your favorites program. This is just like when you use a mouse on a computer. But of course, there are also some functions that is no less useful like voice navigation or other functions.

LG Magic Remote 2016

As its major connectivity, LG UH7700 is equipped with 3 HDMI supports HDCP 2.2, 3 USB Ports, 1 Composite IN and 1 Component IN. Actually it is quite complete, for the needs of the moment, they are not quite enough especially for HDMI Ports. Most of 4K TVs in its class are equipped with 4 HDMI Ports. This certainly will cause new problem if your HD devices are lot more than HDMI Ports provided. But for the needs of broadcast, media experience and a contents streaming, what provided by UH7700 series are good enough.

Audio Performance

One of the nice feature offered by UH7700 is it allows you to calibrate sound with the mic on the remote. But despite audio system of LG UH7700 is coming from premium audio Company HarmanKardon, but its performance is still disappointing. The sound is loud a thin TV like UH7700 but of course a great audio performance is not just loud. If you want truly impressive audio performance, adding external audio system like sound bar is still needed.

As we have discussed above, overall, performance of LG UH7700 is average but it is great for class. The highlight is about HDR plus Dolby Vision Technology that offers better performance in brightness, dynamic range and color reproduction. The depth of black level is strong for a fellow IPS 4K TV, but it is not as  strong as other TV in its class like Samsung SUHD TV lineup or Vizio P series. The use of IPS panel may offer wider range of Side viewing angle than VA panel but in other hand, it makes deterioration in black level and contrast. Additionally, local dimming and Tru Black panel is not quite strong to improve black level though it is much better than nothing. The other downside is about audio sound. Although its audio system is designed by Harman Kardon, but this doesn’t guarantee impressive audio performance of LG UH7700.

The other highlight of UH7700 is about their smart TV platform called WebOS 3.0. It is much better in performance than previous version particularly about its streaming ability. Interface layout is also designed nicer with colored strip bar and make you easier to organize your favorite apps. Features offered are also very complete and useful.

With a price far below top class UH9500 or from other brands, compared to them, of course LG UH7700 has many downsides. But in price range, it is one of a 4K TV with the best performance in picture quality and smart TV and became one of best selling TV in the market.
