LG OLED G7 Review

Features and Technology

The excepting of built-in sound bar and design, the technology of LG OLED G7P and features that offered are similar to other model of LG’s 2017 4K HDR OLED TV Lineup. Coming with OLED panel that has individually self-lighting pixel, LG OLED G7 has infinite native contrast ratio, perfect black level, and excellent black uniformity. This certainly makes its dark room performance is excellent. On the other hand, with the support of Ultra Luminance technology, this also makes LG OLED G7 has quite bright peak brightness, makes the picture displayed on their screen looks remains excellent when set in a bright room. Additionally, color gamut delivered is also excellent due its panel uses 4 sub-pixels technology (RGBW) which supported by Tru Color Accuracy. Since almost all aspects of picture quality produced by OLED G7 are excellent, this certainly also makes the picture displayed on its screen looks absolutely amazing, no matter the light condition of a room where it is used. Not even just that, with excellent side viewing angle coverage, the picture displayed on its screen also looks remains excellent when viewed from the side angle, as good as when viewed from the front and center. This is one of the major advantages of OLED TV than LED TV, where on the screen of LED TV, the picture will look well only when viewed from the front and center, while when viewed from an angle, the picture look degraded.

HDR Effect

In addition amazing picture quality, LG OLED G7 also offers great performance on some other features. Coming with HDR technology, it is powered by Active HDR engine that doesn’t support one HDR format only, but most of HDR formats that available are also supported by OLED G7 including HDR 10, HLG (Hybrid Log Gamma), Dolby Vision, and advanced HDR by Technicolor. This certainly gives you more option to enjoy movies with different HDR format. Additionally, since it is oriented on HDR, this TV also has a feature named “HDR effect” where when it is turned on; it can improve the brightness and color range of the images. Combined to Tru 4K Up-Scaler that fairly well improves any resolution video contents to near 4K quality, this allows you to enjoy any contents in nearly 4K quality with wider color and brightness range, as possible as close to 4K HDR.

The other attractive features that offered is about its smart TV platform where with WebOS 3.5 as its smart TV platform, it offers simple, attractive, and responsive smart TV experience with a lot of interesting apps and smart features provided. Additionally, it is also equipped with foldable 4.2 channel subwoofer with 60 watts of total sound output for OLED65G7P and 80 watts for OLED65G7P. This doesn’t only makes its sound is impressive, but also can be functioned as a stand when a TV seated on the table or can be folded when the TV is mounted on the wall.

Design is one of the major factors that makes LG OLED G7 is sold far more expensive than other model of LG’s 2017 OLED TV lineup except W7 series.  With a design named “Picture on Glass” design and premium finish, it looks luxury and elegant in your room. A super thin OLED panel is mounted on a sheet of glass, makes the TV is super slim and its thickness is almost similar to about seven cards in your wallet. Meanwhile, from the front, the TV looks very minimalistic. The outer edge of the display is glass with about 10 mm inner edge is black border and there is only a small gap between the edge and picture area. When viewed from the front, almost all of display area is picture. At the bottom of the display area, there is a sound bar with a radiator-style grill design and also acts as a stand when the TV sits on the table. Meanwhile, in order to the TV can be mounted on the wall, the sound bar can be folded backward. Unlike OLED E7 where all inputs/outputs and electronic components are placed in a slim box behind the bottom third of the screen, on OLED G7, they are placed in pedestal base which blend with the sound bar.

Performance of LG OLED G7

Picture Quality

Like other model of LG’s 2017 OLED TV lineup, picture quality of LG OLED G7 is excellent. As we know, one of the major advantages of OLED TV is about its infinitive contrast ratio and perfect black level. Since it has individually self-lighting pixel where each pixel can switch on/off/dim individually without affected by the condition of other pixel surrounding. This makes when showing totally black, the panel doesn’t emit light at all, so black produced is really perfect. Additionally, this also makes its black uniformity is also excellent. And since high contrast ratio and depth of black is one of the major aspects of picture quality, particularly when the TV is set in a dark room, this certainly also makes the picture looks remains really amazing when set in a pitch black room. On other hand, its black is level is also quite perfect to reveal details image in dark scene required to display HDR images like the intended. The result, you will see excellent shadow details of HDR images like intended by HDR technology itself. You need to know, there might a lot of HDR TV released in 2017, but not all of them can show shadow details of images excellently like the intended, let alone as good as OLED TV including LG OLED G7.

OLED TV is far superior in dark control and precision light

On the other hand, LG OLED also has good peak brightness. With about 750 nits of peak brightness, it is quite bright to dampen the glare of ambient light, make the picture looks remain excellent when set in a bright room. Additionally, its peak brightness is also more than enough to show highlight of HDR images like what recommended by UHD alliance as the developer of HDR 10 format. As we know, to show highlight of HDR images like the intended, particularly HDR 10 videos, an OLED TV must have at least 550 nits of peak brightness. This is different to the standardization of LED TV where they must have at least 1000 nits of peak brightness. Nevertheless, since HDR image is usually mastered in 1000 – 4000 nits of peak brightness, OLED G7 certainly is not able to show highlight of HDR images at the native peak brightness where HDR images is mastered. But even so for OLED, it is fairly good and better than the predecessor OLED G6 series.

Additionally, LG OLED G7 also has excellent wide color gamut, better than the predecessor OLED G6 and only a bit worse than Samsung QLED TV lineup as the TV with the widest color gamut in 2017.Almost all colors of HDR images in DCI P3 can be covered well, even colors in Rec.2020 also can be covered fairly well. A bit drawback, it cannot show green as saturated as other colors. However, overall, its color gamut is quite wide to show colors of HDR images displayed on their screen looks fairly accurate, no matter the format of HDR videos, whether it is HDR 10 and HLG that require DCI P3 color space or Dolby Vision that require Rec.2020 color space. LG OLED G7 also has fairly good color volume. Except at nearly its peak brightness, it can show its wide color gamut fairly well at its entire brightness range, even at extremely dark colors. This certainly makes it can fairly accurate show colors of HDR images at any brightness, no matter it is displaying dark scene or bright scene. Still about color reproduction, LG OLED G7 also already support 10 bit depth of colors that means it can deliver more than 1.07 billion shades of colors. As the comparison, 8 Bit TV can deliver about 16 million shades of colors only. The result, color of images displayed on its screen looks very smooth without any major color banding. Some little color banding might still be visible at darker colors or gray scale, but this should not be a serious problem when the TV is used to watch movies.

Meanwhile, for anticipating the many low resolution videos which available in the market, LG OLED G=7 is also equipped with great 4K Up-scaling engine named “Tru 4K Up-Scaler. This allows you to enjoy any non 4K contents in nearly 4K quality. No matter the resolution of the video source, whether it is 1080p videos like Blu-Ray movies, 720p videos like movies from HD TV, or even low resolution videos with 480p resolution like DVD movies, all of them will displayed clearly and sharply in 4K resolution with small details are still preserved well. Of course, the higher resolution of the source, the final images in 4K produced will look sharper with small details preserved better. Not even just that, it also has a feature named “HDR Effect” that can improve the brightness and color range of the picture. This allows you to enjoy any content with the quality as close as possible to 4K HDR.

OLED TV vs LED TV Viewing Ngle

The other perfect performance that offered by LG OLED G7 is about its side viewing angle coverage. Since OLED panel doesn’t have backlight, this makes its side viewing angle coverage is wide, even far wider than LED TV with IPS panel that indeed is designed for that. The result, when you watch TV from the side, the picture still looks remains amazing, as good as when you watch them from the front and center. This is different to LED TV where the picture displayed on their screen usually look degraded started at 20 degrees off center and front. If you often watch TV from the side or you have a plan to use it with viewers watch TV from multiples angles, this TV might be a good choice for you.

Motion Handling and 24p Play Back

OLED TV Motion Handling

Since OLED panel has extremely low pixel response time, this certainly makes all models of OLED TV including OLED G7 have excellent motion handling. Pixel response time of OLED G7 even is far lower than the lowest pixel response time that can be reached by LED TV. The result, when displaying fast paced contents, the picture produced looks very smooth and clear with almost no motion blur visible. Following fast moving object, there is only an extremely short faint trail where most people might notice that. Combined to its amazing picture quality, this certainly makes LG OLED G7 is as great TV when used to watch sports program or fast movies. Meanwhile, when used to watch 24p movies, LG OLED G7 also does a great job, no matter the frame rate of the source. Whether it is 24p videos like Blu Ray Movies,  24p movies via 60i signal like movies from satellite TV, or even 24p videos via 60p signal like movies from streaming device, all them will be shown clearly and smoothly without judder noticeable. To remove judder without adding “soap opera effect”, you just need make some certain settings on their picture setting like turn on the “Real Cinema”, Set “Tru Motion” to “User” and set both Sliders (De-Blur and De-Judder) to “0”. Additionally, since OLED G7 has native 120 Hz refresh rate panel, this certainly also makes it is able to interpolate both lower frame rate contents 30 fps and 60 fps fairly well.

As the major connectivity, LG OLED G7 is equipped with 4 HDMI ports and all of them support HDCP 2.2 and HDMI 2.0 Full Bandwidth, while that supports ARC is HDMI 2. Additionally, there are also 3 USB ports behind it, two USB 2.0 (USB 2 and 3) for connecting with other device like Digital Camera, Handy Cam, and others, and 1 USB 3.0 (USB  1) for high speed connection like USB HDD. In addition to HDMI and USB ports, there are also Antenna In, Composite In, Ethernet, and Digital Audio Out (Optical).  As we have mentioned, all of their inputs/outputs ports are located on the backside of the sound bar that also act as the pedestal base. Meanwhile, talking about its input lag, although not as low as SJ9500 or SJ8500, but the input lags of LG OLED G7 are also excellent. In both PC mode and Games mode, its input lags are similar, that is lower than 25 ms at both 1080p and 4K source. What offered by OLED G7 certainly is quite low to please you when playing any kind game so feel responsively and without laggy, even for fast paced games that require fast reflexes.  Combined to its amazing picture quality and great motion handling, this certainly makes OLED G7 as a great TV for games.

Smart TV

LG WebOS 3.5

Like other models of LG’s 2017 TV lineup, LG OLED G7 also comes with WebOS 3.5 as its smart TV platform. In this version, it is supported by e new chip that makes its performance is faster and more responsive. Nevertheless, although WebOS has been revised several times, but there is no major change on its User Interface or Home Screen. At the bottom across the screen, there is still a familiar “Strip Bar” that can be scrolled and contains a lot of quick access icons to Setting, Apps, and Inputs. You can customize the “strip bar” by rearranging the quick icons to bring your favorites apps up to front. Otherwise, if you don’t often need it, you can relegate it to the back. This allows you to launch your favorite apps or the app that you frequently use quicker without leaving the home screen. Additionally, it also support multi-tasking, allowing you to switch between opened apps quickly. Meanwhile, talking about apps and features provided, there are a lot of apps as their preinstalled apps like YouTube, Netflix, Amazon Videos, Web Browser, Live TV, and many more. Even for Netflix and Amazon, it has its own dedicated buttons on the remote, allow you to launch them directly without entering home menu. Additionally, there is also apps store named “LG Apps Store” which provided tons of downloadable apps, contents, and games where you download directly from your TV. Although what provided by LG apps store are not as many as what provided Samsung Apps Store or Google Play Store, but it more focused on the apps what the people what.

As the controller, LG OLED G7 is equipped with two remote, the first is basic remote while the second is excellent “LG Magic Remote” that has a lot of smart features. Discussing its magic remote, as functionality, it has similar functionality and button configuration t as the remote of OLED C7 or B7, but it has thinner and longer body and has metal finish.  On the remote, there are a full number keypad and some quick access buttons, standard navigation button, and scroll wheel. This remote is equipped with built in microphone for voice navigation, allow you to control some TV features or functions with your voice. The excellent feature that offered is “point and click”. You can scrolling or move the menu highlighted by scrolling the scroll bar or use navigation pad and click the scroll wheel to select the menu. On other hand, if you don’t like use the navigation pad, you can move the remote and cursor movement of cursor on the screen will followed you remote’s movement. This is like the remote of WII Nintendo where you can select a menu or app quickly and easily.

Sound Performance

One of the major aspect why LG OLED G7 is sold far more expensive than lower model is about their built sound bar. As we see on specification table above, both model of OLED G7 is equipped with 4.2 channel built-in sound bar and for 65 Inch (OLED65G7P), it has 60 watts of total sound output while for 77 Inch (OLED77G7P), it has 80 watts of total sound outputs.  As the comparison for 65 Inch, LG OLED G7 has the same sound output as the lower model E7 series. Nevertheless, G7 has additional woofers that makes it can deliver better and more steady low-end frequency or bass. On other hand, the built-in speaker is also place in such away so can deliver fairly well stereo separation. As a result, the mid-range can be reproduced fairly well, makes dialogue heard clearly and focus while the high-range is also heard pretty good. Overall, sound performance of LG OLED G7 is better than E7 or even most of Ultra Slim TVs. Nevertheless, since its woofer is installed on a slim box, this course makes it cannot deliver the full-on bass response as good as separate premium sound bar. Additionally, one of that catches our attentions is its ability to play Dolby Atmos. OLED G7 is already equipped with built in Dolby Atmos Decoder that allows you enjoy a more immersive sound quality and a wider soundstage experience. Nevertheless, since the lower models of LG OLED TV also already support Dolby Atmos, this certainly is not a plus value to should be considered for its price that is far expensive.

Infinite contrast ratio and perfect black, excellent black uniformity, excellent rendition of colors, and other strong performance of picture quality aspect make the picture displayed on the screen of LG OLED G7 looks really amazing. Not even just that, with wide viewing angle coverage, it just not offer you to enjoy its amazing picture quality from the front and center, but also from the side. Additionally, with great sound performance, this allows you to enjoy any contents with superb picture quality and great sound performance without adding external sound bar. Coming with HDR, LG OLED G7 also offer great HDR performance and supports most of HDR formats, allowing you to enjoy HDR movies in more HDR formats option. Additionally, great performance of other features offered like good motion handling, low input lags, and other also make it is as a great TV fro mixed usage, whether for watching TV shows, movies, sports, playing games, and others. On other hand, simple, responsive, and attractive smart TV experience that offered by WebOS 3.5 also makes you more comfort when enjoying home entertainment in your home. It seems there is almost no major shortage of OLED G7 except its huge price.

Should I buy this TV? As we have discussed above, LG OLED G7 indeed has superb picture quality and great performance on some other features. However, except its design and sound performance, what offered by OLED G7P are similar to what offered by the lower model like E7, C7, or even B7, on other hand, it is priced far more expensive than them. Now, the decision comes back to you according to your preferences and need. If you don’t mind to spend more hundreds even thousand dollars more of your money to get the luxury that offered by OLED G7, you will not be disappointed. But on other hand, if your main considerations in buying TV are only picture quality and performance, you should consider the lower series E7, C7, or B7 that priced far lower cheaper. But even so, this is just for 65 Inch, while for 77 inch, it is not available on the lower series.

Compared to the competitors

LG OLED G6 is the predecessor of OLED G7 and although it is ahs been discontinued by the manufacturer and its existence has been replaced by OLED G7, but there might be still some merchants which sold it. On design terms, they might look similar except some improvement that is not too major. But even so, on features and picture quality terms, there some improvements that make its performance are better. In term of picture quality, OLED G7 has brighter peak brightness and wider color gamut, makes its picture quality is slight better than OLED G6 the predecessor, particularly when playing HDR contents. Additionally, OLED G7 also comes with some additional features like Dolby Atmos, and others. The shortage compared to the predecessor, it is lacking 3D technology. Priced with almost the same price for 65 Inch and far cheaper for 77 Inch, I think OLED G7 as a newer model is a better choice.

LG OLED E7 Review

One level under G7, LG OLED E7 also comes with “picture on glass” design, but it is only available on 55 inch and 65 inch. With the same screen (65 inch), OLED E7 is priced more than a thousand dollar cheaper. The major difference between them is on the sound bar where the sound bar of G7 is foldable while OLED E7 cannot be folded. Additionally, G7 also has additional woofer that makes it offer better low-end frequency response than E7. The other difference is about where their electronic and inputs/outputs of them are located. On OLED E7, the electronic parts and inputs/outputs are located on a slim box behind bottom third of the panel, while on G7, they are located in the box of the sound bar.

LG OLED G7 vs Sony A1E (OLED65G7P vs OLED65A1E, OLED77G7P vs XBR77A1E)

Sony OLED A1E Rear

Which is cheaper between them, this is depending on the screen size. For 65 inch, XBR65A1E is sold more than a thousand dollar cheaper or its price is similar to E7. But for 77 Inch, XBR77A1E is sold thousands dollar than OLED77G7P. Since both of them use similar panel that is OLED panel by LG, and although they are powered by different technologies and picture engines, this doesn’t make they don’t have any significant difference on their picture quality. But on other terms, since it is made by different manufacturers, of course there are many differences between them that should be considered. If OLED G7 comes with “Picture on Glass” design, Sony A1E also comes with a unique design named “One Slate”. The other difference that offered is about their smart TV platform where Sony A1E comes with Google Android TV. In term navigation and ease to use, Web OS is simpler, easier, and have a lot features that will make navigation feels easier. Meanwhile, the advantage offered by Sony is about its apps store where with “Google Play Stores” it offers many more apps, contents, and games due it is powered by a lot of more developer. The other uniqueness that offered is about its sound where to produce a sound, Sony A1E doesn’t use conventional speaker. To produce a sound, A1E utilize its own screen that vibrated by a set of actuator. Nevertheless, in term of performance, this is not able to beat sound performance of LG OLED G7.
