LG OLED C6 Review (OLED55C6P, OLED65C6P) : Curved OLED HDR 4K TV
LG OLED C6 series is part of LG’s 2016 OLED TV lineup. It is the only model that comes with curved panel type and the lowest model of LG’s 2016 OLED TV that comes with 3D technology. In the market, it is available on 2 sizes, OLED55C6P with 55 Inch screen size and OLED65C6P with 65 Inch screen sizes. Like other models of LG’s 2016 OLED TV or LG SUHD TV lineup, OLED C6 series also comes with HDR ability where it already supports two HDR formats at once, HDR 10 and Dolby Vision. The benefits, although C6 series is sold cheaper than above series OLED E6 and G6 series, but overall, it has similarity in display specs.
As we know, unlike LED TVs where they need backlight, OLED doesn’t need backlight because each pixels of OLED TV can turn off/on /dim individually. This allows OLED TV can delivers perfect black level because the condition of each pixel is not affected by the conditions of other pixels. Because black level is the denominator of contrast ratio, this allows OLED TV including OLED C6 series delivers infinite contrast. It is about the main advantage of LED TV than LED TV. The other advantage is bout viewing angle where it offers perfect viewing angle and there is no LED TV can do even for IPS panel.
In the market, OLED C6 series is sold much cheaper than the series above E6. OLED556CP is sold about $2500 while OLED65E6CP is sold about $4000. Each of these prices is about $1000 cheaper than E6 series with the same screen sizes. But of course with the passage of the time, these prices are not fixed and can still change at any time.

The Performance of LG OLED C6
As mentioned, LG OLED C6 series is the only one of LG’s 2016 OLED TV lineup that comes with Curved Panel. But there is a big question in here, Why LG uses curved panel for C6 series? If the purpose is for improving viewing angle, this course is very wasteful considering OLED itself already delivers wide viewing angle. But even so, one of the advantages of curved panel, with the same screen sizes, the picture will looks bigger on curved panel. But you should also consider additional cost for curved panel. With the other words, if your purpose in choosing curved TV like OLED C6 series is want to get better performance, you will likely will disappointed. But if you have another purpose in buying curved TV like aesthetic or other reasons, and don’t mind the additional cost, please get one.
If we ignore about its curved panel, LG OLED C6 series offers similar display performance than above series E6 or lower series B6. It is one of 2016 TV models with stunning performance in picture quality. Of course, this cannot be separated from superb performance of OLED in black level, contrast ratio, and color gamut coverage. The other benefit of LG C6 series, its picture engine called Perfect Mastering Engine” already supports HDR 10 and Dolby Vision HDR formats. This would be a benefit because the competitors like Samsung SUHD TV or top Model Sony 4K TVs support HDR 10 only.
As we know, HDR becomes the main focus in 2016. This technology offers more details and clearer picture quality in dark scenes or sun highlighted area. But of course, to produce good HDR picture quality, there are some criteria that should be met by a HDR TV that formatted in HDR 10 and Dolby Vision. HDR 10 is open source initiated by UHD Alliance while Dolby Vision is a proprietary HDR format initiated by Dolby Laboratories. Read more about HDR 10 and Dolby Vision.
Discuss about the performance of LG OLED C6 in performing HDR, its performance is really great. On black level, OLED C6 can reach almost zero nits of black level, lower than 0.0005 nits of black level, a standardization set by UHD alliance for black level. And for this value, there is only OLED TV can do this job thanks to the use of pixel dimming. While peak brightness achieved by C6 series is about 745 nits, more than 540 nits set by UHD Alliance for OLED. About peak brightness, what achieved by OLED C6 may still far below what reached by top level Samsung SUHD TV or Sony Top Model X940D/930D where they can reach up to 1500 nits. But for OLED TV, this can be said very bright. Moreover, UHD Alliance has set 540 nits of peak brightness that must reached by OLED TV of course, what reached by LG OLED C6 is much above the minimum value of peak brightness set by UHD Alliance. With the comparison of peak brightness and black level achieved by OLED C6, this makes it delivers infinite contrast ratio.
Moving on color performance, LG OLED C6 delivers more than 93% DCI of color space and full 10 bits color, while the minimum value set by UHD Alliance is 90% DCI P3 color space. As we know, 10 bit bits color delivers much finer color gradation than 8 bits color TV. Theoretically, 10 bits color delivers 1.07 billion shades of color while 8 bit color delivers 16 million shades of color. This is certainly a very noticeable difference. And with display specs reached, this means OLED C6 meet all criteria set by UHD Alliance for HDR 10 standardization. With other words, you can play HDR 10 contents on LG OLED C6 without any issues on color, black level, peak brightness or contrast.
But on Dolby Vision, because Dolby Laboratories sets higher value for HDR like 4000 nits peak of brightness, Rec.2020 color coverage, and 12 bit depth of color, of course all of these criteria cannot be met by C6 series. But although it cannot provide Dolby Vision experience like creator’s intended, at least, its picture engine already support Dolby Vision Formats, so you can still enjoy Dolby Vision contents provided by most of Premium VoD Services like Netflix, Vudu, or Amazon. Although not with the perfect quality of Dolby Vision, they still looks wonderful on the screen of OLED C6 with plenty of shadow details, deep black, and rich color.
Talking about motion control, this course has to do when it displaying fast moving images and its native refresh rate panel. And performance of LG OLED C6 can be said excellent. For handling motion blur, it is powered by native 120 Hz refresh rate panel. This value is same to the native refresh rate of top Models LED TVs like Samsung SUUHD TV or LG SUHD TV. But the result is much better than them. Motion blur can be eliminated completely on the screen of LG C6 when it is used for watching sports program or fast movies. But like its brother B6 series, when it used for playing 24p movies from disk media or streaming sources, LG C6 is not so good when controlling the judder, particularly for 24p movies via 60p signal. Of course this became its own weakness of LG OLED C6 compared to the series above E6 or G6 series or top class LED HDR TV like Sony X930D series or Samsung KS9500.
Whether it is entry level of LG 4K TVs with cheap price or top series of LG OLED TV with expensive price, their performance in Up-scaling contents with 1080p resolution or lower to 4K resolution is similar, that is great. 480p signals like from DVDs is up-scaled in near 4K quality greatly, moreover higher resolution like 720p from Cable TV or 1080p from full HD Blu Ray Disk, of course the result is more excellent. It performance is not less inferior to the competitor. Considering 4K Contents that available in the market still scarce, of course this will be very useful. In any case, your main consideration in buying 4K TV certainly want to enjoy videos contents in 4K quality.
One of the advantages of LG OLED C6 than the lower series B6 is about 3D technology where it is powered by passive FPR 3D technology. Talking about its performance, it is absolute stunning, even for 3D images in 4K quality. Unlike on active 3D where there are flickers and crosstalk in certain scenes, OLED C6 with passive 3D offers absolute free flickers and crosstalk. Additionally, with new panel that delivers brighter images, it is minimized the dimming as the nature effect the use of glasses. Color accuracy, black level, and contrast still looks excellent in 3D images.
With the stunning performance in 3D, this course becomes its own advantages of LG C6, moreover in 2016, there are not many HDR TVs that also support 3D, even for Samsung SUHD TV, they are not powered by 3D technology. LG C6 series includes two pairs of 3D glasses in its buying package. For one family, this number may be still lacking. But because their price is cheap, of course this will not become a big problem for you if you must buy additional passive 3D glasses separately. In addition to cheaper, passive 3D glasses also lighter and more comfort to use than active 3D glasses.
In addition to stunning picture quality in HDR or 3D, the other flagship of LG C6 series is about its Smart TV. Like other LG’s 2016 Smart TV lineup, it also features WebOS 3.0 as it platform. We all know, in WebOS is simple, fast, responsive, and comfort to use. With some updates, it offers better performance than previous years. Some issues on two previous versions like streaming ability, and others, they have been fixed on this version. User interface is also designed more intuitive and makes you easier and comfort when managing your favorite apps. Additionally, there are also new additional features like Magic Zoom or Mobile Magic Connection. Talking about apps provided, although not as complete as Tizen or Android TV, apps provided are very diverse. Almost all apps considered important are available on WebOS 3.0. There are web Browser, Premium VoD Services that support HDR, and many others. Additionally, there is also LG’s content store that allows you to download tons of interesting contents and apps.
That is not less interesting is about LG’s magic Remote. The favorite function “point and click” that has same function like mouse on PC will make you more comfort and efficient when controlling apps or surfing on the internet. With the features and performance offered, this makes WebOS 3.0 is including one of the best smart TV platform in 2016.
Unlike OLED C6 or G6 series, LG C6 is not equipped with built in Woofer. This course makes its sound quality is less than the maximum in low frequency or bass. But because its audio system is designed by Harman Kardon, make audio performance of LG C6 is above average. The separation between each channel on stereo sound is exquisite whilst mid-range and high frequency reproduction is also very well. But this is not for low frequency or bass. Once again, there is no built in Wi-FI on C6 series, so this make its bass performance is minimal. And to get best experience in audio sound on OLED C6, you still need to consider buy an additional sound bar or other audio system for improving its audio performance.
Unlike other series of LG’s 2016 OLED TV lineup that comes with 4 HDMI ports, LG C6 is only equipped with 3 HDMI USB ports. This will become a new problem if you have more than 3 HD Devices. Nonetheless, its HDMI already supports UHD 4K 50p/60p, HDR, and HDCP. Moving on USB Ports, I think 3 USB ports (2 USB 2.0 and 1 USB 3.0) are quite enough t cover your disk media, or other devices that use USB as its major connectivity. In addition to these major connectivity, LG LED C6 is still equipped with 1 Component In, 1 Composite In, 1 RF (Terrestrial), 1 Ethernet Ports, 1 Audi Out, (Optical), and Built-in high speed Wi-Fi.
LG OLED C6 is great 4K OLED TV that offers stunning HDR picture quality with prefect black level and the other side, peak white is also bright. It is the only models of LG’s 2016 OLED TV lineup that comes with curved panel. With display specs reached, it meets the spec requirements of HDR 10 set by UHD Alliance to get Ultra HD premium certification. In addition to HDR 10, OLED C6 also supports other HDR format that is Dolby Vision. But even so, although its display specs is not enough decent to meet the specs requirement for Dolby Vision that set higher specs standardization, but at least, you can still enjoy Dolby vision contents on the screen of LG C6 with deep black level, rich color and strong contrast.
In addition to HDR performance, LG OLED C6 also offers stunning performance on some features in 3D, UHD Up-scaling, Viewing Angle and Motion Handling. Additionally, its smart TV is also very attractive and fast with a lot of important apps and features.
A bit downside when it is playing 24p contents via 60p or 60i, because C6 is still in consistent to eliminate completely judder when playing movies from Blu-ray or streaming services. Another downside is about the lack of woofer that course will reduce its sound quality, particularly for low frequency or bass performance. But at least, its audio performance is still better than most 4K TVs that available in the market. To get best experience in audio performance, you can consider buy additional sound bar.
If you do not mind the curved panels, LG OLED C6 is one best of options for you to get 4K TV with complete features and stunning performance but with more affordable price than E6 or G6 series. Furthermore it also already support 3D, of course this will add your comfort when enjoying home entertainment in your home.
