LG 65UH9500 vs Samsung UN65KS9000 Performance
As mentioned, LG 65UH9500 and Samsung UN65KS9000 already support HDR but the difference, 65UH9500 is powered by Super Mastering Engine that already support two HDR format at once, HDR 10 and Dolby Vision while UN65KS9000 is powered by HDR 1000 engine that only support HDR 10. So, how the HDR performance that offered by them?
Let’s start from color performance of each. As we see on comparison table above, both of them are powered by Quantum Dot technology that support wide color gamut. With this technology behind it and supported by the number technologies of each, LG 65UH9500 can cover about 91% of DCI P3 color space while Samsung UN65KS9000 is about 95% of DCI P3 color space. Additionally, both of them also support 10 bit panel that means, they can delivers about 1.07 billion shades of color. While we may already know that the minimum standardization of HDR 10 in term of color gamut coverage is 90% of DCI P3 color space. This means, color gamut delivered by them meet the minimum standardization of HDR 10 set by UHD Alliance for Ultra HD Premium certification. With other words, when they are displaying HDR contents, the color of the picture that displayed on each of their screen will looks very accurate and of course, Samsung UN65KS9000 offers slight better performance than LG 65UH95000 in this case.
Moving on contrast, there is also certain standardization that should be meet by a HDR TV to display HDR contents fully. 0.05 nits – 1000 nits contrast range is the standardization of HDR 10 while Dolby Vision need much more contrast range. Range of contrast reached by Samsung UN65KS9000 is 0.014 nits – 1489 nits while LG 65UH9500 only can reach 0.086 nits – 425 nits contrast range. This display specs shows that contrast reached by UN65KS9000 is much stronger than what reached by 65UH9500 whether it is about black level or peak brightness. Additionally, contrast range delivered by UN65K9000 also meets the minimum standardization of HDR 10 set by UHD alliance while contrast range of 65UH9500 doesn’t.
With display specs in color and contrast delivered by them, this means Samsung UN65KS9000 is compliant with Ultra HD premium certification while LG 65UH9500 is not. With other words, you can enjoy HDR fully on the screen of UN65KS9000 but not for 65UH9500. But even so, we must remember that LG 65UH9500 uses IPS panel, so for a fellow IPS TV, what delivered by it can be said great. The advantage, it offers much better viewing angle than UN65KS9000 that uses VA panel. In other side, LG 65UH9500 already support HDR 10 and Dolby Vision. Although it cannot display them fully, at least you can enjoy HDR 10 and Dolby Vision contents on the screen of 65UH9500 while on Samsung UN65KS9000, you only can enjoy HDR 10 contents.
Motion Handling and Judder
Both of these 65 Inch HDR 4K TVs is used the same native 120 Hz refresh rate panel. The difference Samsung UN65KS9000 is powered by Supreme Motion Rate 240 while LG 65UH9500 is powered by Tru Motion 240 Hz. They are motion handling technology from each of their manufacturers. Although they use the same native refresh rate panel but UN65KS9500 delivers slight better performance than 65UH9500. This means, when they are playing fast motion scenes, motion blur will be more noticeable on the screen 65UH9500 than 65KS9000. But even so, what delivered by 65UH9500 is still above average. A better performance is also shown by Samsung UN65KS9000 when they are playing 24 p contents. No matter it is 24p source like Blur Ray, via 60i signals, or 60p signals, it offers judder-free. LG 65UH9500 may offers judder-free when it is playing 24p contents from Blur Ray, but when play 24 contents via 60p or 60i signals, the judder cannot be eliminated completely.
Both of Samsung UN65KS9000 and LG 65UH9500 perform similar a good job when they are handling sources with lower resolution than 4K. With UHD Up-scaling engine behind UN65KS9000 or Tru 4K Upscaler behind 65UH9500, you can enjoy good picture quality in 4K resolution even if the sources are SD o 480p contents like from DVD or SD TVs. And of course, the higher resolution of the sources such as 720p or 1080p, the result certainly is better and finer. As we know, a great performance of UHD Up-scaling engine of a 4K TVs is still required considering most of the contents that available in the market still have lower resolution than 4K.
Their difference about 3D is very clear where LG 65UH9500 is powered by passive 3D technology while there is no 3D technology behind Samsung UN65KS9000. But out of their difference,, 3D performance that offered by 65UH9500 is really amazing moreover it comes with passive 3D technology that offers judder-free and flicker-free. The 3D images looks clear with very noticeable the depth of 3D images. In other hands, it comes with some benefits on their 3D glasses where they are more comfort to uses, lighter, and cheaper than active 3D glasses. A slight shortcoming, each of eyes only can receive a half resolution of the images where this becomes a technical characteristic of passive 3D technology.
In term of Smart TV, both of them also feature the same attractive and responsive Smart TV platform. LG 65UH9500 comes with WebOS 3.0 while Samsung UN65KS9000 comes with Tizen OS. I will not compare between these OS in detail because this will take a long time. But globally, their user interface of them is designed with the same intuitive and user friendly. On their “Home Screen” WebOS 3.0 comes with strip bar in the bottom across the screen while Tizen OS comes with a “ribbon” contains graphical shortcut also placed the bottom across the screen. Talking about performance, the loading time of apps or switching between apps offered by them is very quick. Apps provided by WebOS 3.0 is also as useful and complete as provided by Tizen OS. There are Amazon Prime, Netflix, YouTube, Contents Store, Web Browser, and many more.
In term of controller, LG 65UH9500 is equipped with LG’s magic Remote that has a lot of useful functions like “point and click, voice navigation and many more. While in the box of Samsung UN65KS9500, there is Smart Controller that has a function like universal remote. Samsung has dropped point and click functions, so there is no touch pad like on Samsung Smart Touch Remote. But the advantages, once the other devices connected on your TVs, you can control your TV and other devices connected with a single remote.
For a slim TV like them, sound quality that offered by them can be said very impressive. LG 65UH9500 is equipped with 2.2 channel speaker system with total power 40 watts and designed by HarmanKardon while Samsung UN65KS9000 is equipped with 2.2 channel speaker system with total power output 60 watts. As the result, both of them offer similar impressive sound quality. High frequency or treble, Middle, and low frequency (bass) sounded balanced. Overall, their sound quality is above average, but compared to stand alone sound bar, it certainly is not quite enough to match. So, although for a slim TV their audio system can be said impressive, but it still can be improved by the additional external sound bar to get the best sound experience.
As their major connectivity, LG 65UH9500 is equipped with 3 HDMI ports and 3 USB ports while Samsung UN65KS9000 is equipped with 4 HDMI Ports and 3 USB Ports. Although about HDMI ports UN65KS9000 offers more but there is no Composite and Component In behind it while 65UH9500 is equipped with 1 AV in and 1 Component In. Their other connectivity is Ethernet Port, RS 232, Audio Out (Mini jack), RF (terrestrial), Digital Audio Out (Optical) where the number of each is 1. The difference, all connectivity port of LG 65UH9500 is installed on the back panel while on Samsung UN65KS9000, not all of ports are installed on back panel. As instead, there is upgradable One Connect Box where all HDMI Ports and 2 USB Ports are installed. This gives a benefit when there is a firmware update of HDMI or USB, you just need to upgrade your One Connect Box without changing your TVs.
