Samsung Q7F Review (QN55Q7F, QN65Q7F, QN75Q7F) – Samsung 2017 Model Flat QLED TV Series 7
Samsung Q7F Series is the lowest model of Samsung’s 2017 QLED 4K TV lineup. In the market, there are 3 screen size options available including 55 Inch (QN55Q7F), 65 Inch (QN65Q7F), and 75 Inch (QN75Q7F). The excepting of it come with flat panel, what offered by Q7F series is identical to what offered by its brother Q7C series. We can see, the rearmost letter “F” on Q7F or “C” on Q7C is stand for “Flat” or “Curved” that represents it is flat TV or curved TV. Meanwhile, letter “Q” on Q LED represents quantum dot that it indeed becomes the main technology behind Samsung QLED TV including Q7F.
Overall, picture quality that offered by Samsung Q7F is good, especially about color reproduction. Its color reproduction even is better than top model of 2016 lineup despite they also already use quantum dot technology. Considering great color performance that offered by Samsung QLED TV including Q7F, it is not exaggeration if Samsung use ‘Q’ letter as the representation of Quantum Dot as the name of their lineup. In addition to great color performance, Samsung Q7F also offers deep black level and strong contrast that makes its picture quality looks stunningly. In addition to good picture quality, Q7F also offers good motion handling and low input lag that makes it is great for watching sports program or playing video games. The other strong point of Q7F is a about new version of Tizen OS where in this version, Samsung has overhauled the visual of Tizen OS with a white them and nice animator. But unfortunately, like other model of Samsung’s lineup, the use of VA panel makes its viewing angle is poor. This means, picture quality will looks degraded if you watch TV from side viewing angle.

Performance of Samsung Q7F
As we have mentioned above, overall, picture quality of Samsung Q7F is good and above average. One of the main advantages of Q7F is about their color reproduction where with advanced Quantum Dot Technology behind it, Q7F can deliver wide color gamut, even better than last year model Samsung SUHD KS Series. As the note, Samsung Q7F can cover about 99% of DCI P3 color space. It is very great considering for displaying HDR 10 contents fully, it needs at least 90% of DCI P3 color space. No matter it is displaying SDR content even HDR content, this makes color of the picture that displayed on its screen looks very accurate, even for hard-to-reproduce color. On other hand, although it is not perfect, color gradient of Samsung Q7F is also quite well and looks very smooth when it is inputted by HDR 10 signals with 1 bit depth of color. Maybe in the darker color, some imperfections is still visible, but this should not be a big issue.
Black level is dark and native contrast ratio is strong. Additionally, black uniformity is also good. All of them makes it is a good TV when used in a dark room. As the note, black level reached by Samsung Q7F is about 0.02 with native contrast ratio around 5000:1. This might not as deep as and strong as what offered by Samsung KS Series of 2016, but what reached by Q7F can be said well. This is great considering it is still lower than 0.05 nits of black level as the minimum recommendation of HDR 10. This means, when displaying HDR contents, there will not be an issue on contrast and black level. Blacks of images will be revealed well, even in a dark room.
Although peak brightness reached by Samsung Q7F series is not as bright as what reached by Samsung KS Series of 2017, but at least it is still above average. This means when used in a room with decent light, quality of the picture still looks consistently. But unfortunately, what reached by Q7F series about peak brightness is still below 1000 nits as the recommendation of HDR 10. This means when it is used in a very bright room, its peak brightness is not able to drown out the glare, so this makes Q7F series is not as good as Samsung KS Series when you have a plan to place it in a very bright room despite it offers better color reproduction.
Additionally, Samsung Q7F series is also equipped with great performance UHD Up-scaling engine that allows you to enjoy lower resolution contents in near 4K quality sharply and clearly, as good as from native 4K contents. As we know, native 4K contents that available in the market is still scarce, whether it is from streaming source or TV broadcaster. In here, the role of UHD Up-scaling engine is very important. We bought 4K TV certainly want to enjoy video contents in 4K quality, because without being able to enjoy them on the 4K quality, the purchase of a 4K TV will seem futile.
From great performance of most of display specs that offered by Samsung Q7F series, all of them make the picture that displayed on its screen looks stunningly, no matter it is used in a dark room or a room with a decent light. Nevertheless, once it is used in a very bright room with a lot of windows, its peak brightness is not quite bright to drown out the glare. The use in a very bright room should be avoided to be able to enjoy to the maximum image quality. Nevertheless, for its peak brightness that is relatively low, Samsung might release new firmware for Q7F for improving its peak brightness.
Although overall, picture quality that offered by Samsung Q7F series is great, but this didn’t apply when you watch TV from side viewing angle. Like other TVs with VA Panel technology, the viewing angle of Q7F is poor. The quality of the picture will start to deteriorate at 20 degrees off center and front. To be able to enjoy stunning picture quality of that displayed on its screen, watch TV from side viewing angle should be avoided.
Motion Handling and 2p Play Back
Samsung Q7F offers excellent motion handling even it is far better than what offered last year model Samsung SUHD TV KS series. Its pixel response time is very quick, that make it is great when used for watching video contents with a lot of fast moving scene like sports program or fast movies. The result, short trail following a notion objects might still be noticeable, but it is still far better than what offered by Samsung KS Series of 2016. This is a significant improvement by Samsung considering Samsung’s TVs never be the best in handling motion blur. Additionally, Samsung Q7F series also offers great performance when playing 24p contents. No matter it is native 24p contents likes movies from Blu ray, 24p contents via 60p signals likes movies from streaming media, or 24p contents via 60i signals likes movies from Satellite TV, all of them are displayed clearly without judder and soap opera effect. And because Q7F series has native 120 Hz refresh rate panel, it already support 30 fps and 60 fps motion interpolate and able to interpolate well lower frame rate contents.
Like Samsung KS series of 2016, Samsung Q7F is equipped with 4 HDMI Ports and 3 USB ports as their major connectivity. The other inputs/outputs that provided are RF In (Antenna In), Ethernet, Digital Audio Out (optical), and other. Like top models of 20116, all HDMI Ports, 2 USB Ports, and Antenna In are installed on separated called ‘One Connect Box’. In 2017 Verison, One Connect Box comes with much larger design and needs a second power cable. Additionally, all inputs/outputs ports of 7F series are also installed on it. This is very practical especially when there is an update for the firmware of HDMI or other ports in future. You just need to update or change your box without change your TV.
Talking about input lag, overall, input lag of Samsung Q7F at any source is low once game mode activated, even in PC mode. Combine to low pixel response time, this makes Q7F is great TV for video games. Playing games on QF feel very responsive without laggy, even when you are playing fast paced games which require fast reflexes.
Smart TV is the other strong point that offered by Samsung Q7F series. As its platform, it feature Tizen 2017 OS that powered by a quad core processor. Overall its performance is similar to last year model. With the support of quad core processor, its performance is very fast and responsive. This makes the loading time of an apps or selecting between apps felt responsive. Additionally, navigating between different menus is also felt responsively and straight forward. Additionally, the user interface is also similar to last year version that is simple and easy to use. The big change precisely is about its appearance where on 2017 version where it comes with white theme and nicer animation. Talking about apps provided, there are a lot of most popular and most useful apps provided. There are VoD Service like YouTube, Netflix, Amazon prime Video, and other, Clod game service such as Game Fly and PlayStation Now, Screen Mirroring, Web browser, and many more.
Talking about Remote Control, Samsung Q7F comes with Samsung Smart Remote. In functionality, it is similar to last year models where it can be used as universal remote and there is built in microphone for voice navigation functionality. The buttons provided is also very minimalist even there is no “number” buttons”. The difference to last year model is about t its material where it is made from metal.
As a part of Samsung’s 20117 QLED TV, picture quality is the major advantage that offered by Q7F series. Overall, its picture quality is good no matter it is used in a dark room or bright room. Black level is very deep and contrast is very strong with good black uniformity. Additionally, the major advantages that offered by Samsung Q7F as part of QLED TV lineup is about its color reproduction where it can almost perfectly cover DCI P3 color space or more precisely around 99% of DCI P3 color space. This makes color of the picture that displayed on its screen looks very accurate, no matter it is displaying SDR or HDR content. As long as you don’t watch TV from side viewing angle, picture quality that offered by Samsung Q7F is very amazing. The other improvement over KS series of last year is about motion handling where it can handle motion blur far better that offers smoother picture with less motion blur when it is sued for watching TV. Additionally, combination of great motion handling and low input lags also makes it is a great TV for video games. Smart TV also becomes its strong point that makes you more comfort when enjoying K entertainment at your home.
