Overview

Samsung MU7000 Review

Samsung MU7000 is a mid-end of Samsung’s 2017 4K HDR UHD TV lineup and also a successor of KU7000 series. It is a flat model of Samsung Series 7. The excepting of the screen form, what featured by MU7000 is similar to MU7500 series. In this case, MU7500 come with curved panel. In the market, MU7000 series is available with some screen sizes options including 40 Inch (UN40MU7000, 49 Inch (UN49MU7000), 55 Inch (UN55MU7000), and 65 Inch (UN65MU7000).

Still focus on HDR, Samsung MU7000 is powered by 4K HDR Pro Engine and already supports HDR 10 format by UHD alliance and HLG (Hybrid Log Gamma) by BBC and NHK. Meanwhile, for maximizing the quality of the picture produced, it is powered by the number of Samsung’s advanced technologies. On its panel, it uses VA panel with Edge-Lit backlight. This TV is not equipped with local dimming technology. But as the instead, it is powered by UHD Diming technology, the software manipulation that design for improving black level and contrast of Samsung TV.  Still about black level and contrast improvement, MU7000 is also powered by Essential Black Pro technology that uses a ‘moth eye’ filter to deflect light and reach deep shades of black. This makes MU7000 series is including mid-end TVs with deepest black level. Meanwhile, for delivering wide color gamut, Samsung MU7000 is powered by 4K Color Drive Pro, results in most of colors of the picture displayed on the screen of MU7000 looks accurate. Additionally, it also already supports 10 depth of color that makes color gradient of the picture produced looks very smooth.

For handling motion blur and 24p movies, Samsung MU7000 is powered by Motion Rate 120 Technology based on native 60 Hz refresh rate panel. Its performance might not be the best in class, but at least, the picture displayed still looks smooth when used for watching sports or other fast moving images. The other strong point of MU7000 series is about their input lag where their input lag under “Game Mode” is low enough for any kind of games, even for fast paced games. And that is not less attractive is about the Tizen OS as its smart TV platform where it is simple and responsive smart TV platform with a lot of useful and interesting apps available.

As a TV that uses VA Panel, poor side viewing angle certainly becomes the major drawback of MU7000. Started at 20 degrees off center and front, the black will look tend to grey and color shift. Nevertheless, as long as you don’t often watch TV from side viewing angle, this certainly is not a problem.

Samsung MU7000 Performance

Picture Quality

Overall, picture quality of Samsung MU7000 is good and above average, particularly when set in a dark environment. This is due it has high native contrast ratio and good black uniformity. As we know, a TV with good black uniformity and high contrast ratio is able to display blacks look really black. With about 6300:1 native contrast ratio, this means MU7000 can reach about 0.016 nits of black level. This is deep enough to make dark scenes look excellent on the screen MU7000, even when set in a dark room. On the other hand, what reached by MU7000 is also quite dark to show details of images in shadow of HDR images look very clear like what intended. As we know, to display dark scene of HDR 10 videos like what intended, a TV must reach 0.05 nits or darker of black level.  Essentially, black level and contrast are the strongest point of good picture quality produced by MU7000.

Samsung UHD Dimming

While contrast ratio and black level of MU7000 is excellent for LED TV, peak brightness reached by Samsung MU7000 is not brighter than average. With only about 360 nits of peak brightness, this is only quite bright to make bright scenes looks excellent when set in a dark or moderately lit room, but when set in a brighter room, its peak brightness is not quite bright to muffle the glare. Additionally, the ability of MU7000 in reducing the reflection is also not so good when set in a bright room, so makes the reflections is more prominent than most of other TVs. Meanwhile, when inputted by HDR signals, it might be able to show the highlight of HDR image looks quite bright, particularly when set in a dark or moderately lit room. However, it is still far from 1000 nits as the minimum recommendation for displaying HDR 10 videos like what intended set by UHD alliance.

10 bit vs 8 Bit Depth of color

Talking about color reproduction, Samsung MU7000 already supports wide color gamut. Although color gamut delivered by it is not as wide as what reached by many high end TVs, but at least, it already support wide color gamut required by HDR images. The result, it doesn’t only can properly show colors in Rec.709 of SDR images, but also most of colors in DCI P3 color spaces as the color coverage of HDR. This certainly makes most of colors of images are displayed accurately on the screen of MU7000, even when displaying HDR images which require wide color gamut.  Additionally, for delivering smooth color gradient, Samsung MU7000 also already supports 10 bit depth of color. The result most of shades of colors displayed properly without banding. Despite some little imperfections might still be seen on darker color, but overall, color gradient of MU7000 is great.

For anticipating the many of lower resolution video contents which available in the market, Samsung MU7000 is equipped with great performance UHD Up-scaling Engine. This allows you to enjoy any resolution videos with the quality close to 4K. The final images in 4K resulted is really sharp and clear. Even when the source is SD contents like DVDs movies with 480p resolution, the final images in 4K displayed still looks clearly and sharply. Some hallo artifacts might still be noticeable along straight edges, but overall, small details can be preserved well. And when the source has higher resolution like Movies from TV cable with 720p resolution or Blu ray movies with 1080p resolution, the final images in 4K resulted certainly is sharper and clearer with small details are preserved better.

Samsung UHD Upscaling

Unfortunately, you can enjoy good picture quality produced by Samsung MU7000 only when you are watching TV from center and in front of the screen, while when you are watching TV from side viewing angle, the quality of the picture will look degraded. Black of images doesn’t look really black again, but tend to grey, while color shift. And the wider viewing angle you are watching from, the picture will look more degraded. Nevertheless, although it is a major drawback of MU7000, as long as you don’t often watch TV from side viewing angle, this certainly is not a big issue for you. Additionally, it is also not alone considering all of VA TVs also has the same problem on side viewing angle.

Score: (3.7/5)

Motion Handling and 24p playback

While picture quality of Samsung MU7000 is very good for its class, its performance when handling motion blur and 24p movies is average. Its pixel response time is not as quick as most of other TVs. And of course, the result is also not as smooth as what offered by most of other TVs. When used for watching sport program or other fast moving images, in certain scenes, motion blur might be still slight noticeable in the form of faint trail behind fast moving object. But even so, this will not disturb your comfort when enjoying your favorites sport or other fast moving images. Additionally, the performance of Samsung MU7000 when playing 24p movies is not also so good. When it is playing 24p movies, it cannot completely remove the judder, whether it is 24p videos like blur ray movies, 24p via 60i signals like movies from satellite TV, or 24p via 60p signal like movies from streaming device. Fortunately most of people don’t sensitive to judder and if you are one of them, this certainly is not a problem for you.

Score: (3.2/5)

Inputs/Outputs

Unlike most high end TVs where they are equipped with 4 HDMI ports and 3 USB ports, Samsung MU7000 is only equipped with 3 HDMI Ports and 2 USB ports. All of their HDMI ports already support the formats what required for this time like HDCP 2.2, CEC, Audio Return Channel, and more. In addition to USB and HDMI ports, there are also 1 Composite In (Shared), 1 Component In (Shared), 1 RF In (Terrestrial), Ethernet, and Digital Audio Out (Optical). With all inputs and outputs which provided, I think it is enough to cover most of your other electronic devices like Blu Ray Player, Digital Camcorder, DVD player, and more. Meanwhile, talking about its input lag, under “Game Mode” and “PC Mode”, Samsung MU7000 has very low input lag at any resolution. With about 20 ms of input lag, this certainly is quite low for any kind of games, even for fast paced games that requires fast reflexes. Additionally, low input lag under “PC Mode” also make it is very comfortable when used as the PC Monitor.

Score: (4.5/5)

Smart TV Platform

Samsung Tizen 2017

Like other models of Samsung’s 2017 4K TV lineup, Samsung MU7000 also features Tizen OS with Smart HUB as its smart TV platform. Additionally, it is also powered by a quad core processor, results in fast and responsive performance. Compared to last year model, it comes with new white theme and nicer animation that makes its appearance is more attractive.  Nevertheless, the interface is still simple and easy to navigate. At the bottom of the screen, there is a narrow bar that provides quick access to many of most popular apps and TV’s features. This allows you to access one of these apps without leaving the home screen. Once an app is launched, it has fast loading in time. Additionally, selecting between apps also feels very responsively. Meanwhile, talking about apps, there are a lot of attractive and useful apps provided. There are most popular apps as the preinstalled like YouTube, Amazon Videos, Netflix, Web Browser, Cloud Games, and many more.  In addition to preinstalled apps, there are also downloadable apps provided on Samsung apps Store where you can directly download from your TV.

As the controller, Samsung also use a smart remote like what used by other model like MU8000 or MU6300. The remote is simple and not so large with very minimalistic button, even there are no number “buttons”.  It might lack some quick access button, but some of these functionalities can be replaced by voice commands. You need to know, this remote is equipped with built-in microphone for voice navigation or voice search functionality. The other interesting feature that offered, it can be functioned as a universal remote to control other devices connected on MU7000 via HDMI Port.

Score: (4.1/5)

Conclusion

Samsung MU7000 is a good TV for multiple purposes. Overall, picture quality and performance of some features which offered is good. The strongest point of the good picture quality produced is about its high native contrast ratio and good black uniformity that makes dark scenes looks excellent, particularly when playing HDR images. Additionally, it also already support wide color gamut that allows it to properly shows most of colors in DCI P3 of HDR images, so color of the picture produce looks accurate.  In addition to good picture quality in a dark and moderately lit room, Samsung MU7000 also offers some other strong points that make you more comfort when enjoying home entertainment. Under “ Game Mode” and “ PC mode”, its input lag is quite low that makes it is very comfortable for any kind of games or when used as PC monitor. Additionally, although its performance is not as good as most TVs in its class, it is also still comfortable when used for watching sports program or other fast moving images. And the other interesting thing that offered is about its Smart TV platform where with Tizen OS, it offers attractive, simple, and responsive smart TV platform with a lot of useful and interesting apps available.

Should I buy this TV? As we have mentioned, since it has poor viewing angle and its peak brightness is not so bright, as long as you don’t have a plan to use it in extremely bright room or you don’t often watch TV from side viewing angle, MU7000 might be a god mid-end TV for you. But of course, the decision comes back to your according to your preferences. But even so, before you decide to buy it, there are a lot of opinions from its customer who have purchased it where you can makes your further consideration.
