Samsung MU6300 Review

Samsung MU6300 is the entry-level of Samsung 2017 4K HDR LED TV and also the successor of KU6300. In the market, it is available on 6 options of screen sizes including 40 Inch (UN40MU6300), 43 Inch (UN43MU6300), 50 Inch (UN50MU6300), 55 Inch (UN55MU6300), 65 Inch (UN65MU6300), and 75 Inch (UN75MU6300). Like the predecessor KU6300, Samsung MU6300 also still focuses on HDR and is powered by 4K HDR Pro Engine that supports HDR 10 format only. Additionally, it actually is also designed to support HLG (Hybrid Log Gamma), a HDR format developed by BBC and NHK for broadcasting. But because the standardization of HLG is not yet confirmed, it will need a software update in future that support HLG once this standardization is confirmed. On the other hand, come with HDR technology, it is not certified by Ultra HD Premium Certification that means it can display HDR 10 videos fully due some of its display specs don’t meet the minimum standardization set by UHD Alliance. Nevertheless, for its class, their HDR performance can be said great.

On its panel, Samsung MU6300 comes with Flat Panel and uses VA panel technology with Direct LED Backlight Technology. There is no local dimming technology behind it. As the instead, it is powered by UHD Dimming and Essential Black Pro technology for improving black level and contrast. Additionally, for improving color gamut coverage, there is 4K Color Drive Pro technology behind it that makes the color of the picture displayed on its screen looks saturated. Meanwhile, for delivering smooth picture quality when displaying fast moving images, it is supported by Motion Rate 120 Technology based on native 60 Hz refresh rate panel. And for completing your entertainment with smart features, Samsung MU6300 features 2017 version of Tizen OS that powered by a quad core processor.

Samsung MU6300 Performance

Picture Quality

Overall, picture quality of Samsung MU6300 is not so awesome but still better than average. This is due it has excellent black uniformity and great native contrast ratio that makes good dark room performance is very good. As the note, it can reach about 0.017 nits of black level with about 5800:1 of native contrast ratio. The result, dark parts of images displayed on its screen look really dark that makes detail images in dark scenes looks very clear, even when set in a dark environment. Additionally, black level and contrast reached by MU6300 is also darker and stronger than the minimum recommendation for displaying HDR 10 fully set by UHD alliance that is about 0.05 nits. This means when it is displaying HDR videos, there will no issue on black or dark parts of images that produced. But of course, picture quality is not about black level and contrast only.

Samsung HDR TV

While Samsung MU6300 offer good picture quality in a dark environment, it cannot show the maximum picture performance when set in a brighter room, particularly in an extremely bright room. Peak brightness reached by MU6300 even is not as bright as the predecessor Samsung KU6300 series. With about 350 nits of peak brightness, it might be bright enough to display bright scenes well when set in a dark room or moderately bright room.  But when set in an extremely bright room, it will have a problem with the glare on the screen. Meanwhile, peak brightness reached by Samsung MU6300 is also still far from 1000 nits as the minimum recommendation for displaying 10 videos fully. The result, most HDR scenes might be displayed bright enough, but the highlights will not reach at least 1000 nits like what intended by HDR technology itself. Additionally, since it doesn’t have local dimming, the highlights also look more dimmed when the CE dimming of the TV dims extremely dark scenes. But even so, for its class, its peak brightness is bright enough to makes its HDR performance is above average.

dci-p3-vs-rec-2020

DCI P3 vs REC 2020 Color Gamut

Moving on color performance, what delivered by Samsung MU6300 is identical to what reached by the predecessor KU6300 and didn’t support wide color gamut like what required for displaying HDR 10 videos fully. As we know, the minimum recommendation set by UHD alliance for displaying HDR 10 video is at least 90% of DCI P3 Color space. This certainly makes some colors in DCI P3 color space will not be shown properly when it is displaying HDR 10 videos, particularly the deep colors. Color gamut delivered by MU6300 is only enough to properly show all colors in the Rec.709 color space as the color coverage of SDR contents. Nevertheless, at least, most of colors in HDR contents are still shown properly, so this makes color of the picture displayed on its screen still looks accurate, even when displaying HDR contents. Only on deep colors, they will be de-saturated. Meanwhile, Samsung MU6300 also can display 10 bit signals properly without many issues. As we know, for producing smooth color gradient, HDR videos at least require 10 bit depth of color, while MU6300 also support 10 bit panel that means it can delivers more than 1 billion shades of color. The result, color gradient of the picture displayed on its screen looks very smooth and clear. Some imperfections might still be noticeable on darker color, but this should not be a major problem, and overall, this is still very good.

Samsung UHD Upscaling

Meanwhile, for anticipating the scarcity of native 4K contents that available in the market, Samsung MU6300 is equipped with great performance UHD Up-scaling engine. No matter the resolution of the video source, you will enjoy them in 4K quality sharply and clearly. Even low resolution like DVDs movies with 480p resolution still looks sharp and clear with a lot of small details preserved well in 4K quality. And of course, the higher resolution of the source, the final images resulted in 4K quality will look sharper and clearer with more small details preserved well.

But unfortunately, you can enjoy good picture quality displayed on the screen of MU6300 only if you are watching TV from center and front. Started at 20 degrees off center and front, the quality of the picture will start to deteriorate. Color will shift and black will look tend to grey which of course this will also reduce the naturalness of the image. But because it is a native drawback of VA panel, it certainly is not alone considering all TVs with VA panel including premium LED TVS which sold hundreds even thousands more expensive also have the same problem. Nevertheless, as long as you don’t view the TV from side viewing angle, this should not be an issue for MU6300.

Score: (3.7/5)

Motion handling and 24p Playback

Although it is not the best in class, Samsung MU6300 still offers good motion handling. It even is a bit better than the predecessor KU6300 series. Although not as low as the premium series MU8000 or MU9000, but its pixel response time is low enough to make the picture displayed looks clear and smooth when they are displaying fast moving images like sports program or fast action movies. Motion blur might still be noticeable in certain scenes, but it is only a short trail following fast moving objects where this should not be too distracting for most of people. Meanwhile, when playing 24p movies, the performance of Samsung MU6300 is really poor. This is similar to the performance of KU6300 the predecessor where the judder still present on all sources of movies. Even when it is displaying 24p videos like Blu-ray movies, judder still cannot be removed completely. And of course, judder also cannot be removed completely when the source is 24p via 60i/60p signals like movies from satellite TV or Streaming Media. Fortunately, most of people don’t notice and sensitive to judder, so this is not something that should be taken seriously. Additionally, since it has native 60 Hz refresh rate panel, Samsung MU6300 only able to interpolate 30 fps contents to 60 fps contents. Meanwhile, for interpolating 60 fps contents to at least 100 fps, it doesn’t have this ability.

Score: (3.2/5)

Inputs/Outputs

Samsung MU6300 is equipped with 3 HDMI ports support HDCP 2.2 and 2 USB ports are the major connectivity.  Additionally, there are also equipped with 1 Component IN, 1 Composite In (AV In), 1 Terrestrial, 1 Ethernet, and 1 Digital Audio Out (Optical). All of these inputs are located on the side of the TV. Meanwhile, talking about input lag, Samsung MU6300 has very low input lag under game. With about 20 ms input lag at any source, this certainly is quite low for playing any kind of games with any resolution, even for fast paced games that required fast reflexes. No matter it is full HD games, 4K games, or even 4K HDR games, you will enjoy them conveniently without any lag. Additionally, since it also has low input lag under PC mode, use MU6300 as a monitor also will be please.

Score: (4.4/5)

Smart TV

Samsung Tizen 2017

As its smart TV platform, Samsung MU6300 features 2017 version of Tizen OS. It is like what featured by the higher model like MU8000 Series or even Samsung Q7F Series , but of course with some minor differences. Compared to last year version, it comes with a newer theme and animations that make it is more attractive. In addition to very attractive, it is also simple and easy to navigate. At the bottom of the screen, there is a narrow bar as the home menu where you don’t need to leave home menu when accessing most of smart features. Talking about apps provided, there are a lot of and complete apps available. There are most popular apps like Amazon Videos, Netflix, YouTube, and others, web browser, screen mirroring, cloud games, and many more. Additionally, there is also Samsung apps store that provide tons of interesting and useful apps where you can download directly from MU6300. Meanwhile, with the support of quad core processor, its performance is also fast and responsive. Once an app is launched, it will open quickly. Additionally, selecting between different apps also feel very responsively.

As the controller, Samsung MU6300 use a similar remote like what used by Samsung KS Series in last year or MU8000 Series. The buttons are very minimalistic without “number” buttons that makes it is simple to use. This remote is equipped with built-in microphone for voice search or voice navigation functionality.  Additionally, it is also equipped with tons of IR database that allows it can be functioned as an universal remote. This means you can use this remote for controlling other devices connected on MU6300 via HDMI ports.

Conclusion

Overall, picture quality and some features which offered by Samsung MU6300 is identical to the predecessor KU6300 series. Picture quality is above average with good black uniformity and strong native contrast ratio. As long as you don’t set it in an extremely bright room, Samsung MU6300 also offers good HDR performance. Additionally, it also has good motion handling and low input lags that makes it is very comfortable when used for watching sports program or playing any kind of games. And with Tizen OS as its smart TV platform, it offers attractive and responsive smart TV platform with tons of apps available. Meanwhile, since it uses VA panel, poor viewing angle certainly becomes the major drawback of MU6300. Additionally, MU6300 is also not a good TV when used for watching movies due it doesn’t have an ability to remove judder from all source of movies.

Should I buy this TV? If you are searching entry level TV with good picture quality and HDR performance and you don’t have a plan to use it in a wide room where there are viewers come from multiple viewing angles, Samsung MU6300 might become a good choice for you. In addition to it has above average picture quality and attractive smart TV platform, it is also sold with an affordable price.  But even so, before you decide to buy it, there are a lot of opinions from their real customers where you can make as your further consideration.
