Samsung KU6300 is an entry level of Samsung’s 2016 4K TV lineup. Actually, the features that offered are same to the higher series KU6500. A bit differences is about their panel type where Samsung KU6300 comes with flat panel type while KU6500 comes with curved panel type. Both of them are parts of Samsung 6 Series. In term of price, KU6300 is friendlier with our pocket, but in other size, it is lacking some features and technologies that certainly also compromising the quality. Between all models of Samsung 4K TV lineup, Samsung KU6300 comes with the most variant of screen size available. There are UN40KU6300 with 40” screen size, UN43KU6300 with 43”, UN50KU6300 with 50”, UN55KU6300 with 55”, UN60KU6300 with 60”, UN65KU6300 with 65” and UN70KU6300 with 70” screen size. At this time, they are sold in price range $450 – $2100 for this time. But as time goes by, of course these prices could still change at any time.
HDR ability is one of the mainstay features offered by Samsung KU6300. Behind it, there is HDR premium technology that has great performance in processing HDR signal. But like other Samsung’s 2016 4K TV lineup, there is no 3D technology behind it so if your main consideration in searching 4K TV is 3D, of course it is not for you. One of the mainstay technologies behind KU6300 is UHD Dimming, an advanced Samsung’s local dimming technology that designed for improving the contrast and black level. Additionally, for improving color reproduction, there is PurColor technology that makes the color that produced looks more natural. The excepting of 3D technology, Samsung KU6300 provides almost needed to enjoy modern entertainment in 4K quality. Solid color and black level, UHD Up-scaling, attractive Smart TV with Cloud Gaming, and others. All of them are provided by KU6300 series. The Performance of Samsung KU6300
We will discuss picture performance that offered Samsung KU6300 within the scope of their class and not for as a whole. Because if it is compared to Samsung SUHD lineup or higher series, what offered by KU63000 in term of images quality is still far below them. But even so, overall, KU6300 offers good picture quality. When it is used for watching movies from high quality sources like Blu-Ray, the picture looks richly detailed. So does when the sources is low quality contents like DVD or TV, although it is not as great as from Blu Ray, the picture that produced doesn’t look too bad even when highlighted light. This thanks to Ultra Clear Panel technology behind it that reduce reflection of ambient light. And this certainly also cannot be separated from its good black uniformity and high contrast ratio. But unfortunately, a good picture quality that produced by Samsung KU6300 is only when viewers watching from center and front. From side viewing angle started at 20 degrees off center and front, the picture quality looks degraded especially on contrast and color. With the same quality, KU6500 with curved panel offers wider range of side viewing angle.
Moving on to HDR quality, actually HDR quality produced by Samsung KU6300 still doesn’t meet the expectation moreover if you ever seen what produced by Samsung SUHD TV. Nonetheless, it is still better than when you see in Standard Dynamic Range quality. Contrast Ratio is main items which determine HDR quality while contrast ratio depends on black level and peak of brightness. For this case, peak brightness and black level of KU6300 less so the maximum so the result is not also too superb. But we must remember, Samsung KU6300 is an entry level of Samsung lineup with quite economical price. With the same screen size, their price is far below the price of SUHD TV lineup so this need to be understood if KU6300 offers limited HDR capability and far below SUHD TV lineup. But even so, for its class, dynamic range of black level and peak brightness of KU6300 is adequate for producing HDR quality on their screen although with mediocre quality. Moreover, KU6300 is powered by Ultra Clear Panel where it is very effective reducing glare and certainly will improve quality of HDR picture that produced.
The unique from Samsung KU6300 series is about their backlight where it used direct LED technology. Compared to Samsung Series 7 uses edge lit. Theoretically, direct LED backlighting has better performance than edge-lit, but it is thicker. This certainly helps to improve black level of the picture that produced despite in fact it is far below what produced by Samsung SUHD TV lineup.
The other highlight of Samsung KU6300 is about its performance when up-scaling SD or full HD contents to 4K quality. Like we see on 2015 models, Samsung has great performance up-scaling engine. With great performance in up-scaling SD or HD contents to near 4K quality, of course this meets what people expect in buying 4K TV considering most of the contents that available in the market still have SD or HD resolution. Moving on to Motion Clarity, KU6300 is powered by Motion Rate 120 where this technology based on native 60 Hz refresh rate panel. Although in certain scenes some motion blur may still be appeared when it is used for watching sport program, but overall its performance is great compared to competitors from other brand in its class.
Smart TV is one of main best features that offered by Samsung KU6300. Although it doesn’t get Tizen OS as smart TV platform of Samsung SUHD TV lineup an instead features Samsung Smart TV with Smart Hub like what featured by higher series of Samsung UHD TV lineup. One of Plus values of smart Hub is about the user interface and navigation designed user friendly and easy o use. You can organize apps in accordance with your taste. Additionally, there is Home Multiple Users that allows each user can log-in individually and makes different settings. The new of Smart Hub than previous version, there is Game Tab as short cut to Major Smart TV pages that allows you to access tons of cloud games.
The benefit than last year models Series 6, KU6300 is already powered by quad core processor and equipped with Smart Touch Remote while the previous models is only equipped with standard remote and powered by dual core processor. Of course this makes its performance faster and you will be more comfort to operate.
For connecting with other HD devices, Samsung KU6300 provides 3 HDMI 2.0 ports. This does have less than previous models JU6500 that equipped with 4 HDMI ports but it is already compatible to video compression codecs like VP9 4K or H265 and HDCP 2.2 content copy protection. USB ports of KU6300 are also fewer where it only provides 2 USB Ports. In term of USB ports, this may not too influential, but about HDMI ports, this course is very limited considering almost all HD devices needs HDMI Ports for connection like DVD, Blur Ray Players, Games Console, Roku Box and many more. There may 1 AV and 1 Component inputs as an adjunct for connecting with other devices, but of course the results are less than the maximum.
For connecting on the internet, Samsung KU6300 is equipped with high speed built in Wi-Fi and 1 Ethernet Port. This gives you options to connect your TV on the internet with Ethernet or wirelessly. The ability of built-in Wi-Fi of KU6300 is very adequate for connection required by high speed data transfer like 4K streaming or Cloud Gaming. When it is used for streaming 4K contents, there is almost no “buffering” as well as for other purpose. But this course also depends on the speed of your internet connection.
Despite with all of its limited ability especially about HDR ability, of course this is not great TV that meets the standardization of HDR campaigned in 2016. Peak luminance produced is below 1000 nits and of course this is not a great value for producing great HDR contents. So does color gamut produced, this also is below standardization required by HDR contents. But we must remember, this is only an entry level 4K TV that course is sold much cheaper than Samsung SUHD lineup. If its performance is below those top-shelf 4K HDR, this is understandable. In term of picture quality and as long as watched from center and front, overall what offered by Samsung KU6300 is great for its class, but doesn’t meet user’s expectation in HDR quality.
But this limited ability is not for its Smart TV performance. As we have mentioned above, smart TV features offered by KU6300 series is not much different to those to-self series. There are fast Web Browser, VoD Service, Cloud Gaming and other attractive apps organized in user friendly interface. In term of performance, its smart TV is run by quad core processor that course offers faster performance than dual core processor. Moreover it is already equipped with Smart Touch Remote that will make you more comfort when browsing on the internet, selecting and accessing apps and other functions.
