OLED vs LED Technology

Samsung KS9000 is the lowest model of Samsung’s 2016 Series 9 and the only model of Series 9 that comes with flat panel while LG OLED B6 Series is the lowest model of LG’s 2016 OLED TV lineup. Picture quality and great HDR performance are the flagship of both even they come with Ultra HD Premium Certification by UHD Alliance which ensure great HDR Performance. A bit difference is about HDR formats which they support where KS9000 only supports HDR 10 while LG B6P supports both HDR 10 and Dolby Vision. Additionally, both of them also come with equally attractive and responsive Smart TV platform. The downside, both of them are not equipped with 3D technology. To know more details about the performance that offered by each, you can read Samsung KS9000 review in here or LG OLED B6P in here.

The screen sizes that available on both are 55 Inch and 65 Inch so this comparison is only valid on these screen sizes (UN55KS9000 vs OLED55B6P and UN65KS9000 vs OLED65B6P). For each of screen sizes, LG OLED B6 is sold more expensive than KS9000 where OLED55B6P is sold about $200 more expensive than UN55KS9500 while OLED65B6P is sold about $1000 more expensive than UN65KS9000. But of course, their prices certainly are not fixed and could still change at any time and usually will tend to go down as time goes by.

Performance LG OLED B6 vs Samsung KS9000

Picture quality

Let start from picture quality that offered by them because picture quality is the flagship of both as premium HDR TV in 2016. One of the advantages of LG OLED B6 series is about its stunning picture quality due perfect black level and infinite contrast delivered by it. But in other hand, although black level and contrast produced by Samsung KS9000 is not as deep and strong as what reached by OLED B6, but for LED TVs, it is including the deepest and strongest even there are not many other models of LED TVS that can match it. You need to know, black level reached by KS9000 series is about 0.015 nits with abut 6800:1 of native contrast ratio. Meanwhile, as we have mentioned, LG OLED B6 can reach near 0 nits of black level with infinite native contrast ratio. With deeper black level and stronger native contrast ratio, the detail of images in dark scenes will be revealed more on the screen of LG OLED B6 than Samsung KS9000. That’s why picture that displayed on the screen of OLED B6P looks better than KS9000. Nevertheless, black level and contrast ratio produced by KS9000 is also quite enough to reveal detail of images in dark scenes. So, although picture quality produced by Samsung KS9000 is not as good as what produced by OLED B6, but this is still far above average, even there are not many LED TVs can beat it. In other hand, HDR 10 has different black level standardization for LED and OLED. The minimum standardization of LED TV is 0.05 nits while OLED TV is 0.0005 nits. This means what reached by them is lower than minimum black level required for displaying HDR 10 contents fully without any issues on black level and contrast.

OLED TV is far superior in dark control and precision light

oled-vs-led-tv-contrast

If LG OLED B6 offers deeper black level than Samsung KS9000, in term of peak brightness, KS9000 offers brighter peak brightness than OLED B6P. As we know, peak brightness is the one of the most important aspects of HDR. KS9000 reach about 1500 nits of peak brightness on 2% and 10% window while on 50% and 100% window peak brightness dims to 525 nits. Meanwhile, OLED B6 reach about 750 nits of peak brightness on 2% and 10% window and this will dims to 150 nits on 100% windows. This means KS9000 offers brighter picture than OLED B6 and the result, in a bright room with a lot of windows, quality of the picture of KS9000 will looks more consistently than OLED B6P. But even so, although peak brightness of OLED B6 is not as bright as what reached by KS9000, at least it is brighter than 550 nits as the minimum standardization of HDR 10. As we know, minimum standardization of HDR 10 for OLED TV is 550 nits while for LED TV is 1000 nits. This means both of the can display HDR 10 contents without any issues on peak brightness. Meanwhile, when they are inputted by SDR signals, their peak brightness is also quite bright for a bright room.

dci-p3-vs-rec-2020

DCI P3 vs REC 2020 Color Gamut

Moving on color reproduction, color of the picture displayed on the screen of both of LG OLED B6 and Samsung KS9000 is very saturated. With quantum dot behind it, KS9000 can deliver about 95% of DCI P3 color pace while with 4 color sub-pixel technology, LG OLED B6 series can delvers about 98% o DCI P3 color space. This means color gamut delivered by them exceeds the 90% of DCI P3 color space as the minimum standardization of HDR 10. With wide color gamut, the color of the picture displayed on their screen looks very accurate and rich. Additionally, both of Samsung KS9000 and LG OLED B6P also support 10 bit panel that means they can deliver about 1.07 billion shades of color. Compared to 8 Bit TV, they offer much smoother color gradient. In other hand, HDR 10 also requires minimal 10 bit depth of color for displaying fully.

10 bit vs 8 Bit Depth of color

From all display specs that offered by each, we can conclude LG OLED B6P offers better picture quality than Samsung KS9000 due its deeper black level, stronger contrast, and wider color gamut. But even so, what offered by KS9000 is also including the best for LED TV. Moreover, both of them are also certified by Ultra HD Premium by UHD Alliance which guarantees their great HDR performance. In addition picture quality, a bit advantage of OLED B6 is it also already supports Dolby Vision that has higher standardization display specs such as 0 nits black level, 4000 nits peak brightness, Rec.2020 color coverage, and 12 bit depth of color. But even so, although display specs offered by LG OLED B6P is not quite enough to display Dolby Vision contents fully, nonetheless Dolby Vision picture displayed on its screen looks absolute amazing. Let alone for this time there is no TV that has display specs as required by Dolby Vision.

Viewing Angle

OLED TV vs LED TV Viewing Ngle

One of the major downsides of Samsung KS9000 is poor viewing angle. Like other LED TVs with VA Panel, the quality of the picture displayed on its screen will look to deteriorate started at 20 degrees off center and front. And the wider viewing angle, the quality of the picture will look worse. Meanwhile, because OLED B6P series has self-lighting pixel that means there is no backlight behind its panel, this allows it offers perfect viewing angle. This means, there is no a significant degradation on contrast and color when the viewers watch TV from side viewing angle even from extremely angle. As we know, the use of backlight on LED TV makes contrast and color deteriorate if viewed from certain viewing angle. So, if you don’t want o watch TV on the screen of KS9000 without contrast and color degradation, you must set your seat center and in front of the screen. Meanwhile, wherever you are watching from, you will get the best viewing on the screen of LD OLED B6P.

Motion Blur

The use of OLED technology also allows OLED B6P series has much lower response time than Samsung KS9000 that uses VA Panel technology. As the note, pixel response time of OLED B6P is about 0.1 ms while KS9000 is about 16 ms. The result, when you are watching fast moving images like sport program or fast movies, you will not see trail following the fast moving object on the screen of OLED B6P while on the screen of KS9000, a faint trail following fast moving object still slight noticeable. But even so, although a faint trail is still noticeable on the screen of KS9000, for most people it should not be distracting. Meanwhile, when they are displaying 24p movies, Samsung KS9000 offers better performance than LG OLED B6P especially when they are displaying 24p movies via 60i and 60p signals. This means, Judder is removed at any sources on the screen of KS9000 without adding “Soap Opera Effect” while for OLED B6P, the judder cannot be removed when it is displaying 24p contents via 60i and 60p signals.

Samsung One Connect Box Mini

Samsung One Connect Box

Both of Samsung KS9000 and LG OLED B6P are equally equipped with 4 HDMI Ports and 3 USB Ports as their major connectivity. Additionally, there is also Ethernet, RF, Digital Audio Out, and other. The difference, there is no Composite In and Component In (AV IN) on KS9000 while on OLED B6P, it is still equipped with this inputs. The other differences, all of inputs/outputs ports of LG OLED B6P are located on the rear panel while for KS9000, All HDMI Ports, 2 USB Ports, and Antenna In (RF) are installed on separated box called “One Connect Box”. The benefit, if there is HDMI firmware update, you just need updates your box without change the TV. Talking about input lag, overall, Samsung KS9000 offers lower input lags than LG OLED B6 at all input signals. This means KS9000 is better than OLED B6P when used for playing gaming. When playing casual games, their difference may not feels, but when playing 4K HDR games or games which require fast reflexes, their difference will be deeply felt.

Winner: Samsung KS9000

UHD Up-scaling

LG OLED B6P and Samsung KS9000 offer similar good performance when they are doing a job for up-scaling lower resolution contents to near 4K quality. No matter the resolution of the sources, the final images that produced will look sharp in 4K quality, even for lower resolution like DVDs with 480p resolution, the final images that resulted looks sharply with smalls details preserved well. And of course, the higher resolution of the sources, the final images that produced also looks sharper and smoother with small details are more preserved. Considering most of the contents that available in the market still have lower resolution than 4K, of course it is very useful especially when you are streaming video contents from VoD service like Netflix, YouTube, and many more. In other side, this is also useful when you want to watch your old video collections in 4K quality.

Without built-in woofer behind OLED B6p makes its bass performance is not as good as what offered by KS900 series. But even so, both of them equally offer similar good frequency response and decent maximum loudness, although compression and pumping still be present at higher volume. Overall, their sound quality is better than average and should be good for most people. Nevertheless, for you who care about sound quality, of course sound quality offered by them is still less impressive and an addition external sound bar is still recommended.

Winner: Samsung KS9000
