LG UJ6300 Review (43UJ6300, 49UJ6300, 55UJ6300, 65UJ6300)
LG UJ6300 is the entry level of LG’s 2017 4K HDR Smart LED TV lineup. Look at last year model, it is a successor of UH6300. In the market, there are 4 screen sizes option available where you can choose one of them according to the area of your room. Overall, picture quality offered by UJ6300 might not as good as the higher series, but what offered by UJ6300 is fairly good for its price range. The one of the major advantage that offered is about its wide side viewing angle coverage that makes it is very suitable when used in a wide room with viewers watch TV from multiple viewing angles. Additionally, there are also some interesting features that offered like Smart TV, and others. So, what features that offered by UJ6300 and how is performance and picture quality that offered?
Technology and Features of LG UJ6300
Although LG UJ6300 is just an entry level of LG’s 2017 4K HDR lineup, but it comes with the number of LG’s advanced technologies that makes it has good picture quality and performance for its class. On its panel, it comes with IPS panel technology with Direct LED backlight technology. However, unlike UJ7700 series, it doesn’t have local dimming technology. Come with IPS panel makes it has wider viewing angle coverage, allow you to watch TV from any angles with consistent picture quality. Additionally, like most 4K TVs released in 2017, LG UJ6300 also already support HDR technology by the support of Active HDR as its HDR processor. But unlike the higher series like UJ7700 and SJ8500 which already support most of HDR formats, UJ6300 supports HDR 10 format only and might also HLG (Hybrid Log Gamma) with upcoming software update. Not just can display HDR, it also has a feature named (HDR Effect) that improve the brightness and color range of SDR images, so you can enjoy any video contents with the quality as close as 4K HDR quality. For maximizing its color performance so makes the color of the picture looks fairly accurate, it is supported by True Color Accuracy technology. With the supports of all of these technologies and as long as you don’t use it in a dark room, the picture displayed on the screen of UJ6300 is fairly good,
Meanwhile, for delivering smooth and clear picture quality when playing fast moving object like fast movies or sport program, LG UJ6300 is powered by TruMotion 120 Hz technology based on native 60 Hz refresh rate panel. Combine to its low pixel response time, this makes the picture produced looks smooth and clear without many motion blurs be shown noticeable. But unfortunately, when used for playing 24p movies, its performance is not so good. The other advantage that offered by UJ6300 is about its low input lags, makes it is very comfortable when used for playing any kind of game, even for fast paced games. For connecting with other devices, it is equipped with complete inputs/outputs like 3 HDMI Ports, 2 USB ports, and other inputs/outputs. Additionally, for offering you a simple, attractive, and responsive smart TV experience, LG UJ6300 features WebOS 3.5 as it’s Smart TV platform. As we know, WebOS is one of the best smart TV platforms. But unfortunately, it is not equipped with LG’s magic remote and only equipped with LG Standard remote.

Performance of LG UJ6300
Since it uses IPS panel, this makes the native contrast ratio of LG UJ6300 is low. The result, its dark room performance is not so good due it cannot show black of images looks actually black. As we know, the effect of high native contrast ratio is very sensitive in a dark room. Since black tend to look grey rather than actually black, this certainly makes dark scene of images looks unnatural. Meanwhile, when set in a bright room with ambient light where the effect of low native contrast ratio is not too noticeable, dark scene of images might look far better, but on the other hand, its peak brightness is not so bright, even less than 200 nits. So, the picture displayed on its screen looks fairly good only if the room has natural ambient light. While when the room has very bright ambient light or sunny windows, its peak brightness is not quite bright to fight the glare, make the quality of the picture displayed on its screen reduced by ambient light. On the other hand, although UJ6300 doesn’t support wide color gamut, but its color gamut is quiet wide to properly colors in Rec.709 of SDR images, makes the color of the SDR images looks fairly accurate. Overall, as long as you set it in a dark room or a bright room with intense ambient light, the SDR picture displayed on its screen looks fairly good.
Since it has low native contrast ratio, UJ6300 cannot reveal details of dark scene of HDR images like what intended. This certainly makes shadow details of HDR images don’t look what intended. As we know, for displaying shadow details of HDR images like what intended, a HDR TV should have 0.05 nits or lower of black level, while with about 1300:1 of native contrast ratio, the black level of UJ6300 is not able to reach deeper than this standardization. Fortunately, when inputted by HDR signal, its peak brightness can get far brighter than when inputted by SDR image, so makes highlight of HDR image doesn’t look too dim. But unfortunately, since it doesn’t have local dimming, it is not also able to show small highlight of HDR images brighter. Additionally, with about 300 nits of peak brightness, this certainly is also not quite bright to show highlight of HDR images as bright as what intended for HDR contents. As we know, for displaying highlight of HDR image like what intended, a HDR TV must have at least 1000 nits of peak brightness. Nevertheless, for its class, what reached by UJ6300 is good.
Meanwhile, since LG UJ6300 doesn’t support wide color gamut, not all colors in DCI P3 color space of HDR images cannot be covered by its color gamut. As we know, for displaying HDR videos fully, a HDR TV must be able to cover at least 90% of DCI P3 Color space, while what delivered by UJ6300 is still less than what required. Additionally, since its black level is not so good, this also makes its color gamut narrows at darker colors. The result, some certain colors like green or darker colors are not shown as saturated as a TV with color gamut, even reds and blues are also shown a bit undersaturated. Fortunately, UJ6300 can properly shows colors in its color gamut, so this makes colors of HDR images in its color gamut coverage looks fairly accurate. Meanwhile, still about its color performance, color gradient of LG UJ6300 is fairly good. Color gradient of the HDR picture with 10 bit depth of color look very smooth without any major color banding. Some little color banding might still be visible in the dark green and blue, but it doesn’t have a big impact on the picture quality as the whole.
UHD Up-scaling Engine
For anticipating the many of lower resolution videos which available in the market, LG UJ6300 is equipped with great performance UHD Up-scaling engine called Tru 4K Up-Scaler. This allows you to enjoy any videos contents with the quality as close as 4K quality. No matter the resolution of the source, even low resolution videos like DVDs movies with 480p resolution still look clear and sharp without losing many small details once it is up-converted to 4K. And the higher resolution of the source like HD movies with 720p resolution or Blu Ray Movies with 1080p resolution, the final image in 4K resulted will look sharper and clearer with small details are preserved well. Not even just that, it also has a feature named “HDR Effect” that improves the brightness and color range of SDR images so you can enjoy them with the quality as close as 4K HDR.
Side Viewing Angle
The use of IPS panel might make its native contrast ratio is low, but on other hand, this makes UJ6300 has wide side viewing angle coverage. This might not as good as OLED TVs, but at least it is better than VA TVs. If on VA TVs, the quality of the picture will look degraded started at 20 degrees off center and front, on the screen of UJ6300, the quality of the picture will look more consistent at wider angles. This is very useful if you have a plan to use it in a wide room where there are viewers watch TV from multiple angles.
Motion handling and 24p Playback
When for maximizing its performance when displaying fast paced videos like fast movies or sports, LG UJ6300 is powered by TruMotion 120 Hz based on native 60 Hz refresh rate panel. Combined to its low pixel response time, it does a good job when minimizing motion blur. The result, the picture looks very smooth and clear without a lot of motion blur visible. Following fast moving object, there is only a sort trail that should not have an impact on the picture produced as the whole. Meanwhile, when playing 24p movies, performance of UJ6300 is similar to the higher series UJ7700. It is only able to show smooth and clear picture quality with judder free if the source is 24p videos like Blu Ray movies. While when the source is 24p videos via 60i signals like movies from Satellite TV or via 60p signals like movies from Streaming Devices, UJ6300 cannot completely remove the judder. Nevertheless, since most of people don’t sensitive to judder, this should not be a problem for them when watching movies on the screen of LG UJ6300.
LG UJ6300 is equipped with 3 HDMI and 2 USB ports as their major connectivity. It is a bit less than most of high end TVs where they are usually equipped with 4 HDMI and 3 USB ports. In addition to HDMI and USB ports, there are also 1 Composite In (AV In), 1 Component In, 1 RF In (Terrestrial), and Digital Audio Out (Optical). With all inputs/outputs provided by UJ6300, this certainly is enough to cover most of your other electronic devices, even for old devices where they don’t yet have HDMI port. Meanwhile, talking about its input lag, LG UJ6300 has low input lag at any resolution under “Game Mode” and “PC Mode” and this becomes one of the advantages of UJ6300 as a cheap TV. Its input lags is even lower than most of LED TVs which available in the market. With about 13 ms of input lag at any source, this allows you to play any kind of game responsively without feel laggy, no matter it is 1080p games, 4K games or even 4K HDR games. Even for playing fast paced game that requires fast reflexes, it will not feel laggy.
Smart TV platform
Like other model of LG’s 2017 Smart TV lineup, LG UJ6300 features WebOS 3.5 as its Smart TV platform. One of the advantages of WebOS is about its simple navigation. On its home screen, there is a “strip bar” contains quick access to most of popular apps and features where this allows you to launch one of them without leaving the home screen. Additionally, it also has a lot of advanced options and smart features, make you more comfort when navigating smart TV or controlling the TV functions. Meanwhile, its performance is also fairly fast and responsive. Once you launch an app, it will open quickly. Switching between opened apps also feel responsively. Additionally, talking about apps provided, there are a lot of interesting and useful apps available. There are VoD like YouTube, Netflix, Amazon Videos, Hulu, and many more, Live TV, Games, Web Browser, and many more. Most of their VoD apps like Netflix, Amazon Videos, or YouTube even already support HDR that means you can directly stream HDR contents from them. Additionally, there is also LG apps store that provide tons of interesting apps, games, and contents where you can directly download them from UJ6300.
Unlike the higher series, as its controller, LG UJ6300 is not equipped with LG’s magic Remote, but as the instead, it is only equipped with LG Basic Remote. This remote might lack some smart features like Voice Command, Point and Click, and other, but as the instead, it has several buttons for opening quick menus, makes you easily change some common settings.
As long as you use it in a room with natural ambient light, overall, quality of the picture displayed on the screen of LG UJ6300 looks fairly good for its price range. But unfortunately, its HDR performance is limited, so if you expect a significant improvement of HDR images over SDR images, you might be disappointed. On other hand, the major advantages that offered is about its wide viewing angle coverage where this allows you to watch TV from any angles with a quality that is not much different. The other advantage that offered is about its extremely low input lag that makes it is very comfortable when used for playing any kind of games and its smart TV platform that offers simple, attractive, and responsive smart TV experience.
Should I Buy This TV? As long as you don’t use it in a dark room or an extremely bright room with very bright ambient light or sunny windows, this TV might be a good option for you who have a cheap TV with good performance. Let alone if you have a plan to use it in wide room with viewers watch TV from multiple viewing angles, of course it is better than other TVs in its class that use VA Panel. On its class, there is Samsung MU6300 that sold about a hundred more expensive and has far better contrast ratio, but its side viewing angle coverage is poor. Finally, before you decide to buy it, there are a lot of opinions from the people who have purchased it where you can make as your further consideration.
- Wide Side Viewing Angle Coverage
- Low Input lags for games
- Simple and Attractive Smart TV Platform
- Low Native Contrast Ratio
- Poor Black Uniformity
- HDR Performance is LImited
