LG UH6550 Review (55UH6550, 60UH6550, 65UH6550)
LG UH6550 is a mid-class of LG’s 2016 4K HDR TV lineup Series 6. Like other most of LG’s 2016 4K TV lineup, it comes with IPS panel that makes it offers good side viewing angle. In the market, this series is available on 3 screen sizes, 55 Inch (55UH6550), 60 Inch (65UH6550), and 65 Inch (65UH6550). Overall, UH6550 is a cheap TV with good picture quality. Additionally it also already supports HDR, but unlike the higher series which support both Dolby Vision and HDR 10, LG UH6550 series only supports HDR 10 only. Nevertheless, although it already support HDR 10 only, its HDR performance is limited due some aspects of display specs that delivered by it didn’t meet the minimum requirements set by UHD Alliance for displaying HDR 10 fully. The other attractive point that offered is about Smart TV where it comes with WebOS 3.0, the best smart TV platform in 2016. And as a mid class TV, of course the price that offered can be said cheap. So if you are searching mid class 4K TV with affordable price, you should consider it as your options.

LG UH6550 Performance
Overall, picture quality that offered by LG UH6550 is slightly above average. But even so, this TV is not suitable to be used in a dark room due its black level and contrast is not so deep and strong. As the note, it can deliver about 0.095 nits of black level with native contrast ratio about 1050:1. To be used in a dark room, of course black level and contrast delivered by UH6550 is not strong enough. Even dark scene tends to looks more grey than really black. But once it is used in a room with decent light, the picture will look better. But unfortunately, peak brightness reached by UH6550 is not too bright, let alone when inputted by SDR signals, even peak brightness reached is only a about a half of when it is inputted by HDR signals. As the note, when inputted by HDR, peak brightness reached by UH6550 is about 415 nits on 25% windows while when inputted by SDR signals, it only reach about 200 nits on 25% window. This makes the picture that displayed on its screen is not quite bright when used in a very bright room with a lot of windows. Meanwhile, although when inputted by HDR signals, its peak brightness is increased doubled, but it is still not quite bright for displaying HDR contents fully, even still below average. As we know, for displaying HDR 10 contents fully, a HDR TV should reach at least 1000 nits of peak brightness.
Moving on color performance, with Color Prime Pro Technology, UH6550 can deliver very accurate and saturated color that makes the picture that displayed looks natural. But unfortunately, it is only quite enough for displaying SDR contents that only required Rec.709 Color space. Meanwhile, UH6550 doesn’t support wide color gamut required for displaying HDR contents fully. As we know, HDR 10 needs at least 90% of DCI P3 color space while UH6550 only can cover about 87% of DCI P3 color space. In other hand, although LG UH6500 is not true 10 bit panel, but its color gradient when it is inputted by 10 bit color is good. Color gradient looks very smooth without shades problem or color banding.
The use of IPS panel may make black level and contrast of UH6550 is not so strong, but in other hand, it makes the quality of the picture looks more consistent from side viewing angle. If usually on VA TV, the picture will start to deteriorate at 20 degrees off center and front, at wider side viewing angle, the picture displayed on the screen of LG UH6550 looks more consistent. This give a benefit when it is used in a wide room with viewers come from multiple viewing angle.
From all display specs offered by LG UH6550, we can know LG UH6550 offer good picture quality just when it is inputted by normal or SDR content and used in a well lit room. This is also great TV when used in a wide room due its good side viewing angle. But when used in a dark room, the contrast and black level is not strong enough. In other hand, although it is already supports HDR, but its HDR performance is limited. You might see improvement when watch HDR contents, but the improvement is not too significant over SDR contents. But even so, considering its cheap price, picture quality offered by LG UH6550 can be said well. Moreover, there is no TV in its class that certified by Ultra HD Premium and can display HDR 10 contents fully. So about its limited HDR performance, it is not alone.
For allowing you to enjoy lower resolution contents in near 4K quality, LG UH6550 is powered y Tru 4K Up-Scaler Engine. Its performance is undoubtedly, even identical to top model like UH8500 or UH9500 series. No matter the resolution of your sources, even low resolution contents like DVD movies with 480p resolution, the final image in 4K resolution that produced looks sharply and clearly with small detail preserved well. And of course, the higher resolution of the sources like 720p contents or 1080p contents, the final image in 4K resolution that produced will looks clearer and sharper with more smalls details preserved. This is very useful considering most of the contents which available in the market still have 1080p resolution or lower.
Motion Handling and 24p Play Back
For handling motion blur and 24p contents, LG UH6550 is powered by TruMotion 120 Hz technology based on native 60Hz native refresh rate panel. The result, pixel response time is too high so when it is used for watching fast moving images like sports program or fast movies, there is motion blur noticeable following fast moving objects. This makes UH6550 is not a good TV when used for watching sports or other fast moving images. In other hand, it offers good performance when displaying 24p contents. This means when it used for playing movies from Blu ray Player, there is no judder noticeable. But unfortunately, when displaying 24p movies via 60i signals like satellite TV or 60p signals likes streaming media, its performance is not as good as when displaying 24p from Blu ray. This mean, when displaying 24p contents via 60i or 60p signals, judder cannot be removed completely. Additionally, because it is 60 Hz TV, it is only able to interpolate 30 fps contents and not able to interpolate 60 fps contents.
As their connectivity, LG UH6550 is equipped with 3 HDMI ports, 2 SUB Ports and other inputs/outputs like AV IN (Composite In), Component In, RF In (Antenna), Ethernet, and others. I think its inputs/outputs are quite enough to cover your other electronics devices. Additionally, its HDMI ports also already supports what required for HDMI connection for this time like HDCP 2.2, CEC, Audio return Channel, and more. Input lags of their HDMI ports is also low at 1080p and 4K signals once you activated “Game Mode”. But unfortunately, when inputted by HDR signals, its input lag is too high. This makes LG UH6550 is good TV when used for playing video games, whether it is 1080p games or 4K games. But when it used for HDR games, the games will be felt laggy.
As a cheap TV, Smart TV that offered by LG UH6550 is very attractive and responsive. Moreover it comes with WebOS 3.0 as the best smart TV platform in 2016. User interface is designed very simple and user friendly that makes it is comfortable and easy to use. Additionally, performance is also very fast and responsive. Once an app is launched, it will load and open quickly. The selecting between different menus is also straightforward and feel responsive. Additionally, apps which provided are also very complete. There are VoD (Video on Demand) apps like Netflix, YouTube, Amazon Prime, and more, Web browser, LG Contents Store, and many more. As the controller, LG UH6550 is only equipped with basic remote in the box. But even so, if you want to buy “LG Magic Remote” separately, it is ready for it.
As a TV with affordable price, overall, picture quality that offered by LG UH6550 series is above average. As long as you use it in a room with decent light, the picture looks well with accurate color. Additionally, it also offers advantage about side viewing angle where the quality of the picture will look consistent from side viewing angle. The other good point of UH6550 is about its 4K UHD Up-scaling performance where it allows you to enjoy lower resolution contents to near 4K quality sharply and clearly. But unfortunately, due its weak black level and contrast, the picture will look not so good when used in a dark room. It is also not a good TV for watching sports program considering motion blur cannot be removed. Additionally, comes with HDR technology, its HDR performance is limited due some aspect of display specs like black level, color gamut, and peak brightness didn’t meet the minimum requirement for displaying HDR 10 fully. The other interesting thing that offered by LG UH6550 is about WebOS 3.0 as its smart TV platform. In addition it is very attractive and responsive, there are also a lot of apps available.
Should I buy this TV? As long as HDR performance is not your main consideration in buying TV and you don’t have a plan to use it in a dark room, there is nothing wrong if you buy it. Overall, its picture quality is above average. Let alone it is sold with affordable price. In other hand, although it HDR performance is limited, but it is not alone in its class considering there is no TV in its class which can display HDR 10 contents fully. But even so, before you decide to purchase it, there are a lot of opinions about it from its customers where you can make as your further consideration.
