LG UH6150 Review

LG UH6150 is an entry level of LG’s 2016 4K TV lineup. In the market, it is available on 3 screen sizes, 55 Inch (55UH6150), 60 Inch (60UH6150), and 65 Inch (65UH6150). One of the main advantages of UH6150 series is about its side viewing angle where with IPS panel technology, it offers far wider side viewing angle than other TVs with VA panel technology. This means, for viewing angle, the quality of the picture produced will looks consistent as good as when you are watching TV from center and in front of the screen. The other thing that offered by LG UH6150 as a cheap TV is about smart TV where it come with the same of Smart TV platform featured by the higher series. Good motion handling and low input lags also becomes its advantage that make it is a good TV when used for watching fast moving images or playing  video games. Additionally, their cheap price also becomes than main attraction of UH6150 series.

Performance of LG UH6150

Picture Quality

Overall, picture quality of LG UH6150 is below average, even for its class, it is also not so good. This is due black level and contrast ratio produced by it is very poor, even for IPS TVs. As the note, the deepest black level reached by UH6150 is about 0.2 nits with native contrast ratio about 500:1. The poor black level and contrast also was compounded by low peak brightness that is about 180 nits. But fortunately, although it doesn’t support wide color gamut that required for displaying HDR fully, its color still look very saturated when displaying SDR contents. So, there is a positive side of display specs produced by LG UH6150. The result, dark performance is very poor. Dark scenes that should looks black, it will look tend to grey on the screen of UH6150. And of course, this reduces color accuracy and makes the naturalness of the picture also reduced.  In other hand, if it is used in a room with decent light, the picture displayed is probably looks better but the improvement is not so much due its low peak brightness.

With poor performance on almost aspect of display specs, certainly hard to expect its great performance when displaying HDR contents which required higher display specs than SDR contents. As we know, to display HDR 10 fully and get Ultra HD Certification, a HDR TV should reach 0.05 nits of black level, 1000 nits of peak brightness, 90% of DCI P3 color space and also supports 10 bit depth of color. With all display specs offered by LG 65UH6150, we can know its display specs is far below what required  for displaying HDR 10 fully. This means, it can display HDR 10 contents only, but about performance, it certainly still far from what expected.

Nevertheless, this doesn’t mean LG UHD6150 doesn’t have positive sides. Come with IPS panel makes it can maintain picture quality from side viewing angle. If most of VA TVs will lose image quality started at 20 degrees off center and front, at this side viewing angle, the picture displayed on the screen of UH6150 will look more consistent. The picture deterioration might still be happened, but it is on extremely wide viewing angle.

Additionally, the other positive point of LG UH6150 series is about their performance when up-scaling lower resolution to near 4K quality. It is still needed considering most of the contents that available in the market still have lower resolution than 4K. And with great UHD Up-scaling performance offered by them, of course this allows to enjoy them in 4K quality sharply and clearly. Even for far lower resolution like DVDs with 480p, once it is up-scaled, the final images produced looks sharp and clear with small details preserved well. And the higher resolution of video sources like HD contents of full HD contents, the result certainly is much sharper and clearer with a lot of small details preserved more.

Motion Blur and 24p Playback

Motion handling is also the strong point that offered by LG UH6150 series. Its pixel response time is very low and it is very good when displaying fast moving images like fast movies or sports program. The result, there is a little motion blur or even almost no blur noticeable behind fast moving objects. In other hand, UH6150 series is also a good performer when used for playing 24p movies from Blu-ray where it offers judder-free. But even so, it is only limited on native 24p contents from Blu-Ray, while 24p via 60i signals like movies from satellite TV or via 60p signals like movies from streaming media, judder cannot be removed completely. Fortunately, most of people don’t notice about judder so it should not be a big problem for them.

Connectivity

As its major connectivity, LG UH6150 is equipped with 3 HDMI ports. This amount may be less than most of TVs at higher class, but I think it is quite enough to cover your other HD Devices. Nevertheless, they are already support what required for HDMI connection at this time like HDCP 2.2, Audi Return Channel, CEC, and more. Additionally, there are also AV In (Composite In) and Component In where they can be used to connect your old devices on your TV which don’t have HDMI ports. In addition to them, there are still Ethernet, RF IN, Digital Audio Out optical, and more.  But unfortunately, there is only 1 HDMI port where it certainly is very limited, especially when you want to connect more than 1 at once of your other devices which require USB connections. Talking about the input lag of their HDMI ports, it is very low at any sources and this certainly it is very good. Separated from their limited picture quality, combined between low input lags and fast pixel response time make LG UH6150 series is good TV when used for playing games. No matter the kind of games, the games will be felt very responsively, even for games that require fast reflexes.

Smart TV

Web OS 3.0

WebOS 3.0

One of the flagships of LG UH6150 series as entry level TV is about its smart TV platform, where with WebOS 3.0 as its platform, it offers very responsive and attractive smart TV platform. As we know, WebOS 3.0 is the best smart TV platform in 2016. In addition to it has very simple layout design, it also very fast and responsive. The loading time of an app is felt very fast once you launch it. Additionally, selecting between apps is also felt very responsive with navigating between different menus is straightforward. The other advantage of WebOS is about apps provided where apps which are available are very complete and diverse. There are premium VoD services apps like YouTube, Netflix, Amazon Prime Videos, HuluPlus, and many more, Web browser, LG’ Contents and apps store, and many more including default features and apps by LG.

But unfortunately, LG UH6150 series is only equipped with basic remote as the controller in the box instead of LG’s magic remote. It is lack of some useful functions like pointer, voice navigation, and many more. Of course, when browsing in the internet or inputting text, this will make you more awkward.

Conclusion

LG UH6150 series is an entry level of LG’s 2016 4K TV that comes with limited picture quality due its poor black level, weak contrast, bad black uniformity, and weak peak brightness.  The picture displayed look not so good especially in a dark room. Additionally, although it already supports HDR and can play HDR 10 formats, its HDR performance is also limited due to the limitations of display specs offered by UH6150 series. This means, if you care about picture quality, of course this TV is not for you.  But in other hand, LG UH6150 offers some advantages where there are not many competitors can beat it like wide viewing angle, good notion blur, great UHD Up-scaling engine, low input lag, 24p playbacks and smart TV. Separated from its limited picture quality, it is a great TV for watching sports program, watching movies, or playing video games.

Should I buy this TV? Of course all comes back to your needs and preferences. If you care about picture quality and don’t have a plan to use it in a wide room, there are some better options for you like Samsung KU6300 series that offer better picture but with limited side viewing angle. In other hand, if you preferences according to the advantages that offered by LG UH6150 series, like plan to use it in a wide room, playing video games, or sport program, you can consider it as your choice. Additionally, considering their cheap price and as an entry level TV, of course it is acceptable if LG UH6150 series has some limitations.
